Jan 22, 2010 - Koh Tao.

22 January. On this day I woke up enough early to catch to boat to Koh Tao. I even had time for a small breakfast before I left the Maya Buri. Since I was about the last people entering the boat, I was very keen on finding a seat. Most of the seats were already occupied but I found a seat in front in the seating area, which I grabbed very quickly. Unfortunately did I not noticed what kind of people which I had around me. Just seconds after I had taken my seat, I discovered that I was almost in the middle of a “kindergarten”. Sitting just...

Feb 20, 2008 - Advanced divers

Ko Tao photos Yes I am still here. Today we finished our advanced certification. We went on the morning dive again and did two dives, one multi level and one navigation. There wasn't anything exciting to see and the visibility sucked. Also, when we came up after the first dive it was raining so we were all freezing on the dive boat as it took us to our second dive spot. But we finished the dives and got certified. Once we got back to land, Cindy and Robert packed their bags and left me. I feel kind of down without my family around me! We...

Feb 19, 2008 - Back to school

Ko Tao photos Today the three of us started advanced bright and early. Our first dive was at 8:00am so we had to meet at the dive shop by 7:30am to pack our equipment. It was just us three and our instructor though which was awesome. We did a deep dive to start, going down to 30m. At the bottom we cracked open eggs and the yolks hold together because of the pressure, so we played a little ping pong. I dropped my yoke though when I saw a huge reef shark at least 6 feet long and pointed at it. Cindy is the only one who noticed. We went up a...

Feb 18, 2008 - Lazy day

Ko Tao photos Today Robert went diving with our instructor and finished his open water certification. Cindy and I pretty much just hung out during the day, drinking and eating on the beach then going back to the air-conditioned bungalow to cool down and read our travel books and figure out where to go next. I also decided I should start taking pictures of this place. I've been here so long I think I've got it memorized but I should come back with at least one or two photos of Koh Tao. I bought a new pair of flip-flops because the last...

Feb 17, 2008 - Getting around Ko Tao

Ko Tao photos We are still in Koh Tao. It's been a couple of days since I've had Internet access and we've been pretty busy. I finished my open water certification on Friday but Robert hasn't yet. Yesterday afternoon, the three of us went on two fun dives with our instructor. Then we went out for a fish BBQ dinner on the beach with him and his friend. Robert and Cindy ordered pretty much every kind of seafood. Each fish came out as a meal though, with vegetables and side dishes, so they had a hell of a lot of food to eat. Cindy and I had...

Feb 15, 2008 - Open water certified

Ko Tao photos Today I finished my open water certification. Robert didn't join me because he had a headache from taking way too much water up his nose when we had to swim with our masks off yesterday. After class I went to celebrate with Cindy and Robert at the yummy kabob place we went to last night, but the grill wasn't on yet so I just had a burger and they had appetizers. We decided we needed a massage and I had a bit of a burn from being on the water all day so I got a sun burn treatment. The problem with that, I didn't realize when I...

Feb 14, 2008 - Open water learning

Ko Tao photos Today we got to do our first real open water dives! Luckily we had a late start to our learning so I got to sleep in a little bit before cramming for my quiz this morning. We started with breakfast at Choppers. We ate there a couple days ago and I had french toast which was pretty much the best french toast ever, so Cindy wanted to try it and I wanted to have more. They also have cranberry juice there, which I haven't seen anywhere else in Thailand so it is quite a treat. The other day I had three glasses. Today I managed to...

Feb 13, 2008 - Learning to dive: part two

Ko Tao photos We had a quick breakfast before meeting our dive instructor to go over our homework. After that we wrote a few quizzes to make sure we knew what we were doing well enough to go in the water. We just walked out straight from the beach and did some skills there, where Robert and I had snorkelled yesterday. It was all practicing our skills and we did alright. I think we spent about an hour there but we were so shallow that we weren't under water the entire time. Sometimes we came up for a chat. After the confined dive, we went...

Feb 12, 2008 - Learning to dive

Ko Tao photos Today is our first day of diving school. We had the morning off so after breakfast Rob and I decided to try out our snorkel gear. We walked down to the beach with Cindy and then Rob and I walked into the water from there, all geared up. It's not a great snorkeling spot at all but we got to see our equipment was functioning properly. I did encounter a massive school of fish eating away, quite noisily, at the ocean floor so I followed them around for a little while. Unfortunately a lot of longtail boats are moored there so I had...

Feb 11, 2008 - Samui to Ko Tao

Ko Samui pictures This morning we heard back from the dive shop and everything was a go so we had our delicious free breakfast at the poolside/beachside restaurant and then packed our bags. We also booked a shuttle to the ferry and bought our ferry tickets. During breakfast, "Tell Laura I love her" came on the radio and I thought of my life partner back home, who always sings it to me. Miss you hottie! I was doing journal updates on the lobby computer when Robert came to tell me that check out was at 11am and it was 500B/hr for every hour...

May 19, 2007 - Ko Tao

The next morning, we woke up relatively early, had a relaxed breakfast with Cordelia and then packed up our stuff and headed for the ferry. We stopped in at our neighborhood 7-Eleven to get some snacks and hang out in the AC and then we boarded the ferry to Koh Tao. We all sat up on the deck this time (well, Yao was pretty exhausted - I think he partied with Cordelia the previous night...again...so after trying unsuccessfully to pick up a girl in a pink skirt, he went to sleep on the baggage). Even though we applied and re-applyed our...

Apr 26, 2007 - Ko Tao

Ko Tao was absolutely incredible, definitely the most beautiful evenings had anywhere with unbelievable sunsets (as you can see from the photos!), a lovely excuse to sit on the beach with some pimms and watch the sun change colour while it goes down. The reason behind a week in Ko Tao was to chill out and prepare for the crazy week ahead in Ko Paghnan with the full moon etc. Well it started off pretty chilled out but it didn't take long till we were fully appreciating the night life and up to our usual antics. After the boys found their...
