Oct 16, 2016 - Kuala Lumpur/Ao Nang

3 Days in KL – great plodding all over the city making use of the fantastic public transport system. Ridiculous as it seems, we pride ourselves on never having to catch a cab……no, that’s wrong – we caught one to the airport due to impending flu but Peter did bargain! Flew to Krabi and on to Ao Nang. Again staying at Ibis Styles with the staff all greeting us like family….I know it’s good business and all that but the hugs, smiles and handshakes are heart-warming. I think the Thais are particularly good at this! Escorted to our room by the...

The Almost Posh Tour

Mar 31, 2016 - Khao Sok to Homestay

March 31, 2016 Eke woke up feeling worse and pretty down. She decided to see a doctor. When she told Tony, our tour leader, he told her that he now had the same symptoms and also wants to see a doctor. He suggested that we wait until we are at our next stop, the homestay later today, so we can go to an international hospital in Krabi which has a lot better facilities. We leave "Morning Mist" at 1 pm in an air conditioned minivan (hoorah!) for the three hour drive to our homestay. Once at the homestay the driver of our van is willing to take...

Dec 16, 2015 - Ao Nang /Bangkok

12 Lovely days in Ao Nang and, on all but one, managed to get up at 6am (!!) and walk for 2.5 hours covering about 13 kms….what heroes! Needless to say Peter was the instigator. When you have actually peeled yourself out of bed it’s nice walking in the cool with almost no people around. Packs of dogs were a problem, along with geese and a wild monkey but we soldiered on. Add to this massages, more walking and sunset beers either on the beach or from our patio overlooking giant limestone karsts and jungle and that’s been the routine....

Mar 8, 2014 - Ao Nang... Hong Island, Phranang Beach, Railay Beach

Aventura Indochina

Feb 11, 2014 - Ao Nang/Kuala Lumpur/Brisbane/Hobart

It’s 8am on Sunday, I’m sitting on the patio at Yu Bungalows listening to the long-tail boats buzzing back and forth from the islands, birds chirping, banana leaves flapping together and Peter snoring…..much different from 2 weeks ago.... Arrived in Ao Nang in the late afternoon, as usual without booking any accommodation as we have 2 reliable places and you can do better deals face-to-face. That was mistake number one! For You House (our usual doss) had closed down and Yu Bungalows (another regular) was full. Took 3 hot frustrating hours...

Dec 2, 2012 - Ao Nang

I suspect we’ve upset the God of good timing. Once again, the best laid of plans.....booked and confirmed Yu Bungalows (where we stayed last year – fantastic little houses surrounded by jungle but only minutes from the action) for 3 weeks of much needed rest. Arrived to find Yu (the owner) trying to explain, in broken English, that: a) the whole place had been booked by Thai teachers who were staying for 3 months; and/or b) the rain had washed half the bungalows away; and/or c) her son had left for the army, therefore there was no one to...

We need a holiday!

Feb 12, 2012 - Snorkelling at Night

Tamara, would you like to go swimming in water over your head in seculded caves and tunnels? Ummmm, no thanks. Tamara, would you like to go swimming at night in far off secluded places? Ummmm, no thanks. Tamara, would you like to go swimming with sharks and other scary underwater animals? Ummmm, no way! Yeah, all of those things kind of freak me out. So what did I do last night? I went swimming in water over my head in far off seculded tunnels and caves with sharks. AHHHHHH!!!! The promise of seeing phosphorescent waters made me throw all...

Thailand Trek

Feb 7, 2012 - It's getting hot!

Even though I've been here for less than a week this country is bringing up so many memories from trips past. The decor, the music, and the smells remind me of the good things in India. The pop culture reminds me of the life I left behind in Japan. The sunshine beating down on my shoulders reminds me of the wonderful time I had on the French Riviera. And of course, the beautiful tropical waters take me back to another life and time spent in the caribbean. Thailand feels like the crossroads of all cultures and countries mixed...

Jan 18, 2012 - Yangon/Bangkok/Ao Nang

Spent over a week in Bangkok doing the usual. After 28 days without reliable internet access, we had a bit to catch up on. Have found a nice hotel, New Siam, and at $19pn a real bargain. Christmas day we treated ourselves to an all-you-can-eat Japanese buffet - stuffed ourselves stupid with mountains of sushi and Tom Yam soup to which you add your favourite ingredients. Waddled out and went to the movies. Nice day. Have been in Ao Nang ever since. Wow, 3 weeks in the same place!! Staying at Yu Bungalows just off the main street, best room...

No Reservations

Jan 5, 2011 - Ao Nang
