Jun 26, 2019 - Jerzens to St Moritz via Scuol

Stage 12 Jerzens to Scuol Our campsite last night was in such a deep valley that I doubt if it got more than 5 or 6 hours of sunlight even in summer. As a result all of the camp spots were soaking wet and even got wetter through the night. I know because I was up and down 3 times. In the morning everything was sopping wet including the almost dry socks that I had left out accidentally. However the morning dawned clear and bright promising a good day’s riding. Today we had two options: the scheduled ride of 68 km and an optional 26km out and...

May 27, 2019 - Lunch in Italy and a Snow Storm

Hello from Switzerland, On Sunday we boarded the Bernina Express at the station in St. Moritz for an amazing 2.5 hour journey through the Alps to Tirano, Italy. The Bernina line is the highest railway line through the Alps and it’s said to be the most beautiful in Switzerland. From the alpine lakes, glaciers and tunnels to the snow capped mountains and green meadows, we can tell you that the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. Our group was seated in panoramic cars, so everyone had a great view! Near the end of the journey we travelled...

May 25, 2019 - Innsbruck and St. Moritz

Gruetzi from St. Moritz, Switzerland, For my Co-operators family...you will never guess who I ran into at breakfast in our hotel on Friday morning...Peter Zess and his wife. Their tour group was staying at the same hotel. What are the odds of us being in the same Innsbruck hotel and ending up having breakfast at the same time! We had a nice chat and a bit of a laugh about it all. It was great to see them. After breakfast on Friday, we went for a long walk along the Inn River. There are walking and biking trails on both sides. Lots of...

Jun 16, 2016 - Locarno to Tirano to St. Moritz

Day 6 – Locarno to St. Moritz – June 16, 2016 We received our morning wake-up call early – 6AM - though we really did not want to get up until 6:15AM. We dressed, put our bags out at 6:30AM and went down for breakfast – with our departure time scheduled for 7:15AM. We had to have an early start because we did not know what the traffic would be – and we had reservations on the train all set for 1PM. We boarded the bus as usual – with our group continuing to take up the 2 back rows. Today we started driving along the lakes – first it was...

Jul 22, 2015 - St. Moritz, Switzerland

After the train journey we visited the exclusive resort of St. Moritz. We had to take three escalators to the top for all the shopping. We had free time to explore the ‘Top of the World’ before returning to Milan. St. Moritz is a resort town in the Engadine valley in Switzerland. The highest summit in the Eastern Alps, the Piz Bernina, lies a few miles south of the town. St. Moritz hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948. It is a popular destination of the upper class and international jet set, as well as one of the most expensive ski...

Jun 21, 2014 - St. Moritz

21 June 2014 We wake up to sunny skies again and beautiful views of the mountains from our balcony, what a shame we cannot stay longer. We take a taxi again to the bus station where we pick up the Bernini Bus Express which will take us to Tirano Railway Station where we will board the Bernini Express Train to St. Moritz. When we got to the Bus Station and were waiting in the appropriate Bus Stop, I noticed that everyone else had a ticket very different to our internet piece of paper. As we had arrived over 45 mins early, I have time to...

Aug 21, 2012 - St. Moritz 2 - Final Adventures

I struggled but got up at 7am this morning to get my final endeavors in before returning to student life. First up was another epic climb, I was attempting to get as far as I could on Mt. Mezdi right behind our apartment in 90 mins. I climbed a height of about 500m but had to come down for breakfast. It was sweet to see the sunrise over the mountains above the treeline. Not something you do every day. I got back in time, and the 3 of us journeyed to the top of the Corvatsch summit, topping our other mountain cable car rides to an altitude...

Aug 20, 2012 - St. Moritz 1 - Mile High Living

As usual...EPIC scenery, although different than usual. After an hour drive from Lugano we went up in altitude above 2200m (standard tree line height) and there were stunning vistas of surrounding mountains. However all were with a cool barren atmosphere and cows chiming away with their bells as background noise. This was the Julier-pass, yet another great area of the Alps with a few glaciers and massive waterfalls to boot. Then we descended slightly to ~1800m to the St. Moritz area. We've been used to amazing sights in Switzerland so far...

Dec 22, 2011 - St. Moritz

Off this morning on the train for a 2 hr journey by train to St. Moritz and through the glorious, snowfilled valleys and mountains. It was a site to behold. It hasn't stopped snowing here since the day we arrived...I estimate that good 2-3 ft of snow has fallen so far. St. Moritz is a beautiful spot on this earth..the lake wasn't thoroughly frozen yet so we couldn't hike across the lake. Through a binocular at the lake we were able to view a summer sailboat scene on the Lake Moritz. We had a fancy lunch at a swanky restaurant in St....

May 19, 2011 - Across the border

The last two days we have been traveling through the Dolomites, the Italian Alps. We picked up the car in Venice and drove to Cortina. The fist big change, was when we stopped in a little town to buy cheese and fruit. We went to the fruit store and they spoke only German. We walked two doors down to a shop they only spoke Italian..nobody spoke English. All the signs are in three languages, German, Italian and an Ancient Latin language. We had a wonderful drive through the mountains to Cortina. It was closed. Just kidding, it is however a...
