Sep 16, 2019 - Day 34. Monday. 16/9/2019. Ipsach to Bern (day trip)

Day 34. Monday. 16/9/2019. Ipsach to Bern (day trip) Tonight we fly out of Switzerland. Another beautiful morning and very hot day. We did a loop in the train today where we spent a few hours in Bern which is a beautiful city with lots of old buildings, and from behind the Government buildings you could look down over River Aare which runs around the edge of the city. There were farmers markets in front of the Govt. buildings offering tastings, and speakers were talking of local farming issues. The Clock Tower (Zytglogge), once a city gate,...

Sep 15, 2019 - Day 33. Sunday. 15/9/2019. Ipsach

Day 33. Sunday. 15/9/2019. Ipsach We woke today surrounded by fog - no mountains, trees or sports fields to be seen. It was pretty and not cold. Ian and I packed our ports ready for tomorrow’s departure, and soon we’ll go for a walk. I asked if it not be as long as when we walked from Biel to Ipsach - I don’t think I could handle that again. Trudi and Marcel are a 1 minute walk to the station which their apartment overlooks. This is a local suburban line and there is a 30 minute service on quiet, modern, mostly 2 carriage trains which link...

Sep 14, 2019 - Day 32. Saturday. 14/9/2019. Ipsach to Murten (day trip)

Day 32. Saturday. 14/9/2019. Ipsach to Murten (day trip) Happy 28th Anniversary Sandie and Steve. We caught the 11am train to Murten, a very old Swiss town beside Lake Murten which we loved. There were great views over the lake, Castle Murten built in 1255 and reconstructed in 1755, some remaining walls and some very old buildings. We walked up and down the main street where there were dozens of restaurants, small shops and old buildings, then found our way down to the water via some steps which took us through what seemed to us, peoples...

Sep 13, 2019 - Day 31. Friday. 13/9/2019. Ipsach

Day 31. Friday. 13/9/2019. Ipsach, Switzerland Today is our ‘lazy’ day, and we’re making the most of it. The internet is working well and we’ve managed to post photos, check our email and fb - and play cards! Ian’s not doing too well - but there’s always tomorrow!!!! Trudi and Marcel have breakfast and dinner, so that’s what we do! We walked to the local grocery store Migro, which is only 5 minutes away, and I managed to get a stamp and send a postcard to Uncle Jim and Jimmy - we’ll probably be home before it.... Tonight we had Rosti,...

Sep 12, 2019 - Day 30. Thursday. 12/9/2019. Ipsach

Day 30. Thursday. 12/9/2019. Ipsach, Switzerland What a day! Every day has been great, but some are exceptional, and today’s one of those! Trudi and Marcel told us they had a surprise which was that we were going on daughter Susan and Marcos’s boat to an island for lunch. We left about 10am to walk to the restaurant on the river to meet them. We met Susan on the way and it was lovely to see her again. Continued to the river where Marcos was with the boat which is moored on another lake some distance away but Marcos bought it around to Lake...

Sep 11, 2019 - Day 29. Wednesday. 11/9/2019. Ipsach

Day 29. Wednesday. 11/10/2019. Ipsach near Biel, Switzerland. We both had the best nights sleep for a long time. I can’t remember the last time I wasn’t up during the night for the loo, and then still awake and up at 6.30ish. It was 7.30 before I moved from the bed, then went back and slept till nearly 9! I said ‘oops’ (and sorry) to Trudi, who said she’d only just woken, so I didn’t feel so bad. A quick shower and then the lovely, leisurely breakfast that Marcel prepares of juice, fruit, cereal, yoghurt, cheese, cold meats, tomato, bread...

Sep 10, 2019 - Day 28. Tuesday. 10/10/2019. Ipsach, Biel

Day 28. Tuesday. 10/10/2019. Ipsach near Biel, Switzerland. Happy birthday Robbie from across the miles. 23!! Hard to believe. Love you. We stayed in a lovely Airport Hotel and Marcel was there to pick us up just after 9am. He looks well and we were all happy to see each other. We got a taxi to the Airport Train station, and at 10.09 boarded our train to Beil where we changed to a smaller train for 3 stations to Ipsach, where Trudi and Marcel now live. It is a lovely unit overlooking farmland and hills in the distance, very close to the...

Jul 23, 2018 - Saas Fee to Ipsach

23 July 2018 Picked up from Grossus Mos at 9.30am by Bruno in his electric cart, and driven to the bus station. Very spoilt not having to walk with our bags, and much quicker! Last ride down down down to Visp, and Don will not miss these bus rides!!! Even Trudie thought this driver was not a good one!! We swung all over the place!! Old hands now with this journey, and all the memories from previous time here. Changed trains at Bern, and now with different scenery to Biel. Next was the train to Ipsach and our destination for one night. It is...

Jul 9, 2011 - The Cabin At Lake Neuchatel

July 9, 2011 Saturday dawned with a threatening forecast on a day we had planned for on the shore of Lake Neuchatel. The sun disagreed with the forecast and burst through on our short drive to Lyss to pick James up at 10:00 a.m. Susann was staying home with Dylan and we left his always smiling face for the 30-minute drive to James’s boss, Kjell’s cabin on Lake Neuchatel. We arrived at the remote location to be met by Kjell’s son, Nils, a really great guy with lots of Kjell’s love of life about him. Kjell’s cabin is a rare entity in...

Jul 8, 2011 - A Shopping Spree And A Country Dinner

July 8, 2011 Penny and Brenda had decided to go on a shopping spree into Bern by train and their plan didn’t include me. I tried to hide my disappointment (kidding, of course) as I dropped them at the local Bahnhof (train station). Susann had provided a list of prime shopping stores and Rosmarie left train instructions before she headed off for a day at the office and babysitting later in the day. In the meantime I put in a couple of hours catching up on my blog entries where I had fallen behind. Having caught up on a lot of our story, I...

Jul 5, 2011 - We Return To Brugg/Biel

July 5, 2011 James had worked well into the dark the previous night to finish his painting of the water gate metalwork…looking good. While he and I did some morning clean-up of the grounds and storage areas, the girls were stripping the beds and getting breakfast ready. We began our packing up and were sad to leave Fouvent and the miller’s house. Offers to help Rosmarie do the laundry and house-keeping fell on deaf ears as she insisted it was her custom and desire to complete those chores in the quiet by herself. Knowing Brenda and Penny’s...

Jun 30, 2011 - Fly Swatter Lunch

June 30, 2011 This was a day for relaxing and taking it easy. Brenda had a hair appointment scheduled for 3:30 but otherwise we had nothing definite. Rosmarie went into the office and would return to take Brenda for her hair cut. On our previous drive to the Fabrik, we had passed a roadside restaurant that showed promise so we decided to strike out for there for lunch. Using my unerring sense of direction, we were soon lost before I wisely turned on the GPS. With Tom Tom’s help we were there in a matter of minutes and found it a bit cool...
