Oct 9, 2019 - Basel, Switzerland

Basel is Switzerland's second-largest city after Zurich. Basel has a split personality. On the one hand, it has giant, modern chemical research and pharmaceutical companies; and on the other hand, it has a network of narrow alleys that weave together the city's medieval architectural heritage. Basel is located where the Swiss, French and German borders meet. The official language of Basel is German, but the main spoken language is the local Basel German dialect. Where the border touches France, the people will speak mainly French but will...

Jun 22, 2019 - Last day

Saturday, June 22 - Basel Had a good buffet breakfast at the hotel. Eventually we got checked in and got printed boarding passes for our flights tomorrow. (The standard Windows German keyboard has the 'Y' and 'Z' keys interchanged!! Don't know why, but when I type my name it comes out 'Shirlez'! And that's no good when I'm entering a password.) About 11 am we set out to walk to the Museum Tinguely. We started out down the Greifeng Clara, where we went yesterday. We stopped at the Canon shop to ask about a glitch in one of our cameras--they...

Trip Journal Day 10 - Friday, June 21 Up early today. We put our bags outside our room before 8, went to breakfast and the bags were gone when we came back. We collected the things we were carrying with us for the day, and caught a bus to our hotel before 9. There were about 20 going to the hotel with us. At the hotel, we were met by the Viking representative (an American ex-pat from North Carolina!). After checking in, we went with her on a walking tour of Basel. We were given a Basel card at check-in, which lets us ride public...

Dec 27, 2018 - To Basel

Thursday 27th: To Basel This morning we disembarked from the Crystal Debussy after a light breakfast. Our ten days on board had been delightful and we could not fault any aspect of the cruise. Another one looks highly likely! The flight to Basel was very comfortable in first class and we arrived at lunch time. We had booked a different hotel from the others, the Nomad Lifestyle and Design Hotel, which was very modern and funky. We did not want to waste any time seeing Basel so set out on foot for the centre. We soon came to the Basel...

Dec 15, 2018 - Basel

Arrived in Basel yesterday afternoon. Got to our hotel around 3 and went exploring. The weather was around 32 - 34 degrees, but no rain or snow. We walked across the bridge into the old town which was beautifully decorated. We walked around and ran into the Xmas market. We discovered Gluwein (the Swiss version of hot mulled wine) which is delicious when it is so cold outside. It comes in a mug that you pay for, but can return and get your money back or keep and pay for refills only. We of course kept them for refilling. We found a charming...

Jun 28, 2018 - Crossing Switzerland

Day 2 of this adventure started pretty easy. I woke up early, gathered my stuff, and snuck out of my AirBnB room. I would have liked to say goodbye, but no one seemed to be up and I didnt want to wake them. Grabbed a danish and coffee at a nearby cafe and set Google Maps to look for Liechtenstein. The only challenge with he drive through France was all the construction. It’s like they suddenly decided it is time to fix every stinking road in the whole country. Google tried to route me around some bad traffic jams. In one case, I could see...

Jun 24, 2018 - Boarding the S.S. Antoinette

This was a “down” day as we could sleep as late as we wanted before our 11:00 transportation from the hotel to the riverboat. The S.S. Antoinette was the first “super ship” in the Uniworld fleet. It is over 400' long and will accommodate 154 passengers. On this trip, there is only 125 so you can actually get to know some of the other passengers. Most are from the USA but there are Canadians, Australians and others. After arriving at the boat we took a short walk, had lunch and then took it easy on the sundeck until the rooms were ready. An...

Jun 23, 2018 - Exploring Basel, Switzerland

We arrived in Basel around 10:30 and left our luggage at our hotel while we explored the old part of the city which starts just across the street from our hotel. We each received a Basel Card which lets us use any public transportation (trams, bus) free. So with map of old city and transportation map, off we went! Back before our calendar began, Basel had already been occupied by the Celts. In 30 B.C. the city's strategically favorable position led the Romans to station its military forces on the hill now occupied by the cathedral. One key...

Jun 15, 2018 - Basel to Zurich

After my big art day in Basel yesterday I came to a realisation: 1: yes, things are expensive in Switzerland; 2: my ICOM pass is being accepted at all museums here. So here was a chance to make the most of a situation. After checking out of the hotel, I caught the very efficient and clean tram to The Jean Tinguely museum and enjoyed the current exhibition Too early to Panic by Swiss artists Gerda Steiner & Jörg Lenzlinger which was set up a three-part, labyrinthine cabinet of curiosities between nature and artificiality. It was very...

Helen in Europe

Jun 14, 2018 - Bern to Basel

Switzerland has many a reputation: for being expensive - yes; for being politically neutral - yes 'I'm Switzerland' opined Bella in Twilight when being fought over by her two brooding male protagonists. There is also much misunderstanding about where the country stands in terms of its position in Europe. It is part of the Schengen but not part of the EU. They speak French, Italian and German, sometimes in the one sentence Confused? One thing they always excel at though is precision in terms of public transport - trams and trains run on...
