Aug 19, 2016 - Into the Appenzell Hills

Another beautiful day. Just to the south of Lake Constance or Bodensee is a range of hills called the Appenzell hills. This area is rural Switzerland at its best with rolling farmland, deep valleys and, pretty villages. It was worth driving some of the narrow winding roads to see the scenery. We stopped several times to take short walks to admire the views of the Bodensee and the the countryside. Our final stop was the town of Appenzell which had a number of painted traditional buildings but not as many as we had seen elsewhere.

Oct 15, 2013 - Appenzell

Monday: Off to Munich station for an early start this morning only to find that our train was half an hour late. That meant that the journey to Appenzell which was going to require 3 changes ended up taking 5. Despite a few quick dashes from platform to platform, we ended up arriving only 10 minutes later than expected. Regardless of these exciting moments, we definitely find train travel far more relaxing than driving. The scenery is picture perfect and we both get to see it. Appenzell is just so quaint with decorated houses, cows lolling...

Aug 1, 2007 - Appenzell

Happy Switerland Day! Today is Switzerland`s national day, like our 4th of July. I am in Appenzell, in the heart of rural Switzerland. This area is famous for its strong folk traditions, cowbells and stinky cheese. The town itself is very cute, lots of ornately painted wooden houses covered with flower boxes. Since its a national holiday most everything is shut down, buildings are decked out with flags and banners and everyone is in a festive mood. There was a big celebration in the center of town with bbq'd bratwurst, beer, folk dancing...
