Apr 23, 2019 - A week and a 100 mile journey

Hello dear friends and family, My Way began last Tuesday when I walked over the French Pyrennes. It was 6 hours of continual uphill and 2 more hours to reach the first alburgue(dormitory). Very steep, and according to the guide book, the steepest climb of the trip. If you get stuck in a snow storm at the top you can stay in a wonderful abode. The next few days have been exhilirating and exhausting. The Basque region consists of "rolling" hills, translated to mean steep, up and down, very rocky paths. Thank God for walking sticks or I surely...

Camino de Santiago

Apr 11, 2019 - Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada

11 April – Najera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada It’s another gloomy day on the Camino with only occasional sun and a smattering of rain with occasional gusty cold wind. I can see snow on the mountains in the distance. But today’s walk was lovely on soft trails. I’ve been walking, from time to time, with a woman from San Francisco. Yesterday we stayed at the same hotel and we somehow switched walking sticks. Her poles are about 5 cms longer than mine. I immediately knew this morning that I had the wrong poles. I walked with mine for about...

Solo Camino 2019

Apr 10, 2019 - Navarette to Najera

586.7 kms to Santiago. (Completed 1/4 of the Way) It's getting darn right embarrassing to have such short days. After doing nothing in Logrono for 3 days, then yesterday I walked a mere 12.7 kms and today 16.2 kms. Try telling my feet that. They are acting sullen and swollen. I think they are suffering Munchausen's syndrome. Or maybe I just tied my laces to tight. Either way they are going to have to shape up - we have a longer day tomorrow. The weather hasn't cleared here - still very overcast and cold. I put on my sunglasses this morning...

Solo Camino 2019

Apr 9, 2019 - Logrono to Navarette

9 April 2019 Easy walk today to Navarette. Pat Henderson will recognize the little lake where we stopped to have cafe. All my old Camino friends have moved on. I'm meeting new pilgrims. It's impossible to find a decent place to eat which doesn't open until 8:00 p.m. Too damn late to even think about have a meal. So I stopped at a little tienda and bought a bag of Haribo which I'm eating as I write. Discussed the state of Brexit with a fellow from England, the state of Europe with a fellow from Germany and the state of USA with a woman from...

Solo Camino 2019

Apr 8, 2019 - Rest Day - Logrono

Today is a rest day. Got up late. Washed my clothes. It's either that or have them charge me 5 euros to wash my socks. Actually, it might have been money well spent. If no other piece of clothing is clean - it's always nice to have fresh clean socks - your feet being the most important part of your body along the Camino. But once I get started washing, I might as well do everything so I've taken over the washroom with hanging and dripping things. Late desayuno (breakfast) with 5 cups of cafe solo. Now I'm buzzing. Came back to my room and...

Solo Camino 2019

Apr 6, 2019 - Los Arcos to Logrono

6 April 2019 - 615.6 kms. to Santiago Today walked into the State of La Rioja. At least here, the bartenders won't sneer (in Spanish) "Those English tourists only ask for Rioja". It was sunny today but the wind has kept up. It might look like I have been drinking a lot - pretty red in the face - but that's just windburn (and I'm sticking with that story). I was all set to grab a cab in Viana (about 20 kms into the walk) but there was a festival going on in town and virtually all the roads were closed - so I stopped for a wine to fortified...

Solo Camino 2019

Nov 14, 2018 - Alfaro

We left Cuenca in a near perfect Autumn day and headed for the 'Enchanted City', an amazing array of rock formations in the nearby National Park. A three kilometre walk through the natural formations was fun and we were fortunate to have had the weather for it. The continuing drive took us through a really interesting ancient town amongst the hills where nibbles and vino were the order of the day. Albarracin was almost all terracotta in colour and sat on a hillside overlooking a fast flowing stream. Although a little fresh we found a nice...

Apr 9, 2018 - Navarrete to Azofra

Day 8 - El Camino (week 2) Maximum elevation = 669m, minimum elevation = 485m. Forecast 3-6 degrees! Vineyards, olive groves, blah, blah, blah! Not too bad an early morning walk until the rain started. Then, cold and wet :(( Najera was at the 15km mark. When I saw the 500m to bar sign I was so excited, maybe I could run. No! Not with a pack. Stripped off the wet stuff, ate some yummy Spanish food and drank warm drinks - all forgotten. Extra pair of socks and an extra jacket and back out into the dismal weather. It was 4 degrees when we...

Sep 3, 2016 - Azofra to

Waking at 450, I quickly realize that this is the first night on this journey that I have slept all the way thru the night! Most nights, I am up, 3, 4, even 5 times per night, for the entire trip. I don't feel tired in the mornings, but I am sure that I am not repairing my body as I should be. Reminiscent of my cycle ride across Canada last year, when I had to bail out of riding one day because I was just physically exhausted. That day, I ended up riding in the truck and while our driver was picking up provisions, for the group, I was at a...

Walking with Dad

May 18, 2015 - Nàjera - Grañon

30,5km 8h Laura.

May 16, 2015 - Los Arcos - Logrono
