After 6 glorious months of winter surf in Jeffrey's Bay, I decided to ditch the wetsuit for some much more comfortable boardies and hit the surf up on the south coast. Umzumbe is situated at the mouth of the Mzumbe River in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The name of the river is derived from a band of Hlongwa cannibals who occupied the valley. The Hlongwa was almost wiped out by the Zulu king Shaka in 1828. The area is rich in culture, wildlife, diverse landscape, as well as a plethora of beautiful, un-crowded warm water waves.Jump to full entry

We left Durban today with Johno (another Gapper) joining us and drove 100km South of Durban to a small coastal town Umzumbe where we stayed at a 4 star backpackers lodge (Mantis and Moon Backpackers Lodge) this place seemed like luxury it had everything from an exotic rock pool and jacuzzi with monkeys playing in the banana palms above, to a pool table, foolsball, table tennis, darts, poker and roulette sundecks. oh and did I forget to mention the bar! Aug 4, 2008 - Left Coffee bay for Banana Beach!!!!
We left Bomvu at Coffee bay this morning for a hostel called Mantis and Moon in Banana Bay (Umzumbe). Not much to say about today really as we mostly travelled and stuff today. Mantis and Moon is amazing though! Of all the hostels we have been to so far this was probably the best set-up (however it's very quiet), with a pool, jacuzzi, pool table, foozball, Table Tennis, Black Jack and Roulette table, and 4 massive dogs!!!
