Jul 14, 2013 - Day 1 in Africa

Who doesn't love spending 10 hours on a plane?! Obviously Greg because he threw up in the line waiting to get our passports stamped. However, it let us get through customs quickly. Yay Greg. After arriving in Johannesburg at around 9:30 in the morning we took a cab back to the DaVinci hotel. Still crazy to think that we are in Africa. The Schwartz family landed about an hour and a half after us and we met them at the hotel. My mom and dad took one room and left me with the two other hooligans. It may be a long two nights for the rooms...

Africa 2013

May 6, 2012 - Soweto

The next I tried my luck again to get the train ticket. Didn’t get through. I signed up to a 4hours bike tour through Soweto. It was beautiful and very interesting. Soweto was not what I expected. It is actually quite nice. We saw a lot of places there from the best to the worst. We had local food and drinks and the old house of Neslon Mandela. In the afternoon I went out for another bike ride with Ecis one of the guys from the hostel. He showed me the area where he grew up and introduced me to some of his friends who were playing dice on...

Apr 30, 2011 - SOWETO

WARNING!!!BEFORE YOU READ THIS, PLEASE READ BREAKFAST BEFORE SOWETO Hello! Today we visited the black township of Soweto. Soweto is short for South Western Township. Most of it is very very poor. Most people live in home-made shakes made out of metal and wood. We took a tour of one of the poor settlements called Ellias Motsoaledi settlement. It had only two pre-schools(in the settlement) and that was it for education. The amazing this was even children age three and even younger know about 4 different languages, including local and tribal...

Aug 3, 2010 - Lion Park

Mar 30, 2010 - Soccer City, Soweto, and Meeting S. African Kids

Hi this is Kayla – I love it here. Today, 3/30/10, is nice and sunny. We played a South African team. They are amazing! The score was like 8-1, them having 8. They said they hoped we enjoyed their accents, because they enjoyed ours. We got a tour in a WORLD CUP STADIUM!! It is called Soccer City Stadium. The first and final match are going to be there! We also went to Orlando Stadium. This is a community soccer field. We then went to Noah's Ark, a place for orphaned children. We met Binyana Binana, the South African girls National team. We...

Mar 29, 2010 - Christiana's Thoughts on Day Two (Our First Full Day)

We are in South Africa and it is beautiful. We went to Soccer City Stadium and Orlando stadium. They were big and interesting. We met the Bayana Bayana team. They were nice and kind. We went to a center – Noah's Ark – it was fun to watch the kids sing and play soccer. It was a long ride home after that. Actually not home. I thought we were going home but we really just went to a soccer field to play a game against a S.A. Team. We lost but Diskied at the end. We learned a new version. The people taught it to us. After that we went home. It...

Mar 28, 2010 - Soweto and Noah's Ark

Starting our tour of South Africa off with a visit to Soweto and Soccer City set a great tone for the rest of the trip. Yes this is a beautiful country and yes it is exciting to see the frenetic activity and construction in advance of the World Cup. But it is also important to be reminded of the tremendous historical events that have taken place here in the last twenty years, and of the work that still needs to be done. Soccer City will be a fantastic venue for world class soccer and it was a privilege to see the inner workings of this...

Feb 11, 2010 - Soweto

Wednesday, Feb. 10 Today's was a great lesson in South African history. We visited the Apartheid museum which contained so much information there's no way I'll retain it all. South Africa has a violent history with a series of bad presidents. Things started to look better with Nelson Mandela but the present leadership seems to be screwing things up again. Zutu has 4 wives and still felt the need to sleep with another woman who is HIV positive. He's spending 65 million rands (something like that) on fixing up government buildings but...

Jan 31, 2009 - Johannesburg and Soweto

We took a day tour of Johannesburg focusing on the Apartheid museum and a tour through the township of Soweto. We were picked up from our hostel and joined by a young German couple. The woman was a lawyer in Hamburg – we seem to keep running into other lawyers while travelling. Weird. Our first stop was downtown Johannesburg, which was once considered the Boer Jerusalem. All the recent efforts to make the city a safer place have encouraged some new development and the return of residents and businesses, the place is still a ghost town...

Jul 26, 2008 - JoBurg City Tour - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
