Robben Island lies at the heart of Cape Town's Table Bay and is where Mandela and many of the other leaders in the anti-apartheid movement were imprisoned. Sep 26, 2010 - Robben Island World Heritage Site

Hier sass Nelson mandela, der ertse Praesident des demokratischen, neuen Suedafrikas, 18 seiner 27 jahre Polithaft in einer Einzelzelle ab, schuftete im Steinbruch und schmiedete Plaene fuer die Zeit nach der Apartheid. 1 Ex-Polithaeftling fuehrte uns durchs Gefaengnis, sehr therapeutisch u. doch unvorstellbar, sich freiwillig all dem auf Schritt und Tritt erneut auszusetzen. Unvorstellbarer jedoch die Fakten der Apartheid. Schwarze Inhaftierte bekamen zB deutlich weniger zu essen (ganz offiziell auf Karten vermekrt) als ihre zB ind....

Apr 26, 2008 - Robben Island

On Saturday morning we got on a ferry that was much too old and much too small and travelled an interminable 12 km to Robben Island, the home of Nelson Mandella for 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment. After the extreme nausea subsided, we toured the prison facility and saw Mandella's cell, as well as the cells for the common prisoners, the lime quarry in which they were forced to work, and the rest of the island. The tour was given by a man who was also a former political prisoner for 5 years on the island. He gave his own personal insight...

Feb 2, 2008 - Off to Robben Island

Slept really well last night and woke up about 7.30. Was hot in room so decided to get up and have breakfast by the pool! When i went back to the room the guy who was on the bottom bunk had checked out so i did a quick swap of beds so no more climbing for me for a while at least!!! Off to Robben Island soon so looking forward to that! Carla, Ali and I set off from the hostel a little early so as to mooch around the V&A Waterfront before heading out on our tour.
