Apr 2, 2015 - Shark Cage Diving and Southernmost point of Africa

Tuesday 31st March 2015 Franschhoek to Gansbaai Up late today and had our last beautiful breakfast at the Guest House before packing up and checking out. We bought a few last things in the town before heading off over a really steep and scenic mountain pass eventually arriving down at the coast near Hermanus, a beautiful seaside town famous for whale watching but not at this time of year. We had lunch at a restaurant set into a cave just under the cliff top overlooking the sea, a beautiful spot. We had a really nice meal and then drove the...

Jun 29, 2012 - Diving with Great White Sharks in Cape Town

Good Afternoon! We just got back from caged shark diving and it was the coolest thing I have ever done. I had always wanted see sharks up close, especially great whites, and South Africa is the perfect place to do it! There was a shark that came right up to the cage with its mouth open. Never knew how many teeth they had. I also could never understand how big sharks really were, but the one that came right up to me was at least 10ft. long. The instructor said that it was an early adult and it could grow even bigger! I couldn’t take any...

Mar 29, 2012 - Super Cute German Guy!!

34, HOT, road/mountain biker, loves to travel... a dream? I think not!! This beautiful creature talked to me the miserable 2 hour trip from Gansbaai to Cape Town. I was a wreak after having to leave my Belgian soul-mate, Manon. But I find comfort in the fact that I will be seeing her soon. Anyway, he was very sweet and made me feel better and said he would be contacting me via Facebook. His name is sacha and he is from Germany but is staying here for a couple months. He likes to bike the mountains here. LOL... totally wish I had my bike....

Mar 28, 2012 - The Epic Trip of My Stay!

Monday we did 2 boat trips. The viability was FANTASTIC, best I have seen yet! All the vols dove on the 2nd trip, the first one was short because we only had 5 people and they had to catch a plane. The sharks were great but holy crap... yesterday's trip was EPIC! #1 We got a lie in (sleep in - its a new English term I am adding to my vocab). So the trip didn't go out til 11am, we started preping at 9:30am. #2 I met an AWESOME American couple that came to Africa for 25 days to do some mission work as well as some fun sight seeing. REALLY...

Mar 26, 2012 - Betty's Bay and Shenanigans

On Saturday Moos took us to Betty's Bay to see the penguins. It was pretty neat to see the African penguins in their natural habitat. They just chill there on the rocks and look cute. I think penguins are so dorky they are cute! Anyway, seeing them got me super excited because I get to head to Cape Town on Thursday to work at the penguin rescue for a month and a half. When Chad, one of the other vols, got here he had just left the penguin rescue (SANCCOB). He was there for only one week and he was suppose to stay for 6 weeks, but he didn't...

Mar 22, 2012 - Italian Kisses and Sharks

Haha, I told Manon to "crack a window" the other day and she thought I meant break it. Oh she is so cute and so Belgian. :D I will definitely miss her when I leave. We kind of are attached at the hip here. Anyway, the girl roommates; Manon, Jill, Kat and I, went to Hermanus after the 2 boat trips this morning. I really love that cute little city. Jill still wanted to search for some silver rings and the rest of us just bought some clothes at a cute boutique we found called One Love. Well I got a shirt and some bracelets. We ate dinner at a...

Mar 21, 2012 - Bad Dreams and Volunteers!

Today we got up early to take a trip especially for the volunteers. It was kind of a joke because none of us really wanted to go.... Jill was still feeling sick from yesterday because yesterdays trip was super rough and she gets sea sick. Manon wasn't feeling so hot today either but she went. Catherine went home for the weekend and she just got back this morning and actually just left again. So it was only Daryl, Manon and I. And we still had to chum... lame. :D It was the worst shark diving I have seen yet... we just sat in 16 degree water...

Mar 15, 2012 - The New-Bees!

Yesterday Jill arrived here at the WSP as a new volunteer. Today we had 2 arrive, Daryl and Kathrine. Jill is from Alberta, Canada, Daryl is from London and Kathrine is from Cape Town. Both Manon and I were kind of reluctant to have new people arrive because we got use to have the whole 3 bedroom house to ourselves. We each had our own room and bathroom. Now we share a room, which is fine, if not better. She really is my soulmate from Belgium, we mesh really well and make an awesome team. It was so cute because she was like. "I don't want...

Mar 13, 2012 - Some of My Favorites; The Crew

Gansbaai, (pronounced hansbaai with the H sounding as if you have something caught in your throat), has 8 shops that provide guests and visitors with cage diving with the great white shark experience. I am associated with White Shark Projects as a volunteer, but today because our group was so large, I got to ride on Shark Lady's boat. With a different crew and different way of doing things it was interesting. This is what they do when there is a very large group, other shop will take part of the group. Most of the boats here allow for 20...

Mar 11, 2012 - The Chocolate Cake!!

Gansbaai in English means Goose Bay. This place is amazing and has a lot of history and I am learning a lot! My friend Andy tells me a lot of the history of things here and why they are like they are. In this little sleepy coastal town on Kleinsbaai where I am staying there is not very much to do at all. And we have no car so we cannot even go to the grocery store, they take us on Mondays and Thursdays. The only thing really within walking distance in one resturant named the Great White House which is associated with the Marine Dynamics,...

Mar 7, 2012 - Four Leaf Clovers and Swop Shop

This is such a breath taking place. And the really awesome part is that I get to wake up at the butt crack of dawn and get the boat ready which means I get to see the sunrise and let me tell you it is AHHH-MAZING! Yesterday was Manon and my first actual "working" day, but you really can't call it work. We are basically just help. We pack the boat with wet suits, anchovy oil, tuns heads and towels and such. Then we help wipe down the boat and then help the guests put their life jackets on. The shop usually schedules 2 tours on a daily basis...

Mar 5, 2012 - The Road to Cape Town!

No sea day today. It was a beautiful day out but the water was a bit too choppy. Same story yesterday so I have not been out on the boat since Saturday. It is ok though because I have found things to keep myself busy. Yesterday I took a stroll along the coast and took WAY too many pictures. I love it though, I can't help it, it is sooo pretty!! I walked a long for about an hour I think and thought I should head back, my aim was to make it to the lighthouse but I didn't because I was too preoccupied with taking pictures. :) When I turned...
