Up bright and early we set off to explore the nearby battlefields of Blood River, Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift. Blood River was the first major battle between the Voortrekkers and the Zulu's. After the death of Piet Retief by the order of the Zulu King Dingaan, Andreas Pretorius assembled 464 men to a strategic spot on the banks of the Ncome river. On Dec 16th 1838, 15,000 Zulu's attacked but couldn't break the line of the Boer's rifles. They say that the Zulu blood turned the river red. Hence the name, Battle of Blood River. The little...

The next day we packed up our stuff and headed out of Durban. We decided to take the scenic route through the Valley of 1000 Hills, and its rolling green hills, sleepy villages and traditional Zulu communities. Absolutely gorgeous scenery. With the main route closed we managed to find ourselves on the road to Inanda Dam where the views were breathtaking.
