Dec 3, 2013 - Bloemfontein

From Bonnie's Journal The next morning I planned to walk to the bus station both to get some exercise before sitting on the bus for 12 hours (turned out to be 14), and to save the 30R cab fare. Plus I hoped to get there early enough to get a front seat (it was open seating). Our bus was to arrive in Bloem @ midnight, therefore we'd need to spend the night somewhere - the earliest bus to Lesotho didn't leave until 6 a.m. Since we were so late deciding on our bus schedule it was now too late to book a hostel online. So at 7:30 a.m. the next...

Apr 16, 2012 - We start the trek south

Now we are really pressed to get to Cape Town in time. We leave Eshowe at 6am and with only a couple of stops make Bloemfonteins by 5pm. The roads generally are terrific, the speed limit usually 120, not that our little car with three adults and luggage can reach that very often. We never hear horns and everyone is most civilised. A strong police presence so most are within the speed limits. The service centres (or petroports) offer cafes, restaurants, supermarkets etc and are generally spotless. One thing we have noticed is the lack of...

Jul 27, 2008 - our first day in South Africa

Needless to say, Arabella and I were very excited about seeing Darren and Arabella about her first trip to Africa. From the second we got on the flight from Kuala Lumpur to Johannesburg she was asking ‘are we there yet?’ ‘can’t wait until we are there’. Luckily she slept for most of the flight and so this only started up again about 2 hours from landing and then the whole time we were waiting for our domestic flight and the flight. However, I had to wake her up to tell her we had arrived in Bloemfontein. Anyway, on our way from the airport...

Jun 22, 2008 - Tour ends in Jo'burg...fly down to Claudine's for last week in Africa...

Did not want to get up this morning – the bed was so comfy and I hadn’t been in it long enough! Was first up again as well – typical! Ferdie wanted to take bets on who would be late due to drinking too much last night so he was surprised when I told him most went to bed after the footie! I soon discovered that Rebecca had had a good night and hadn’t gone to bed until 6am – thought I had done well by being up until 1am… Today we basically just drove back to Jo’burg. Was uneventful and we made good time which was a good thing as I now had a...

Bridget's Trip!

Jun 16, 2008 - Bloemfontein via Winberg, Harrismith, & Bethleham#

Drove into town to the Indian consulate where we dropped off our passports for visas...had to pay in rand, bummer. All a-ok so we left at 11 for Bloem on tollroads...N3 to Harrismith, N5 to Winberg, N1 to R700 into Bloem. Chkd into Naval Hill BPers...LP gave it a poor rating but we found Jerry the guy running the place very personable. He fixed me a traditional Afrikaan meal - potjie, a stew with lamb neck & vegie & corn on cob chunks, Bon he fixed a vegie dish w/ chicken in a cheese sauce. The best food we've had in many weeks! Watched...

Mar 11, 2008 - Bloemfontein

To Bloemfontein We had another motorway drive of just over 200 km. (We are making a large loop north, then west, and back south which visits three National Parks - Addo Elephant, Mountain Zebra, and Golden Gate - and also circles the country of Lesetho which is an "island" like country completely surrounded by South Africa.) We heard a radio newscaster this morning reporting a blockage due to an accident on a "Carriageway". Today was another ranch country day. However, we see very few animals considering the amount of tall grass and vast...

Jan 16, 2008 - Back to Bloemfontein via Ladybrand

Archie decided he wanted to come to Roma with us so we waited for him to change. He was desperate for a cigarette but had lost his in a river somewhere so needed to buy some new ones! Steven drove us to Roma - with the sun still out it was a beautiful drive! From Roma, Jennifer the boss' wife, drove me back to Ladybrand where Claudine's mum, Elaine, picked me up and took me back to the farm. She had her quilting friends there so I finally got to put some faces to names of people I have heard so much about before including Julie whose house...

Jan 4, 2008 - Off to Claudine's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well i didn't sleep as well last night which is annoying but think i was paranoid i would oversleep - no chance of that with the storm that was raging from 6am onwards this morning! Anyway, at airport now so thought it was a good chance to let you all know that i am alive and well and so far all is going well! Off to see Claudine in a bit but got here early so as to share the shuttle and thus the cost!!! Tried to get an earlier flight but was too expensive so just going to sit it out! Already passed an hour sitting here!

Bridget's Trip!

Sep 24, 2007 - Kruger - Bloemfontein

Up early again for tea and biscuits before leaving for our 4th and final game drive. Within minutes of leaving the camp we came across a rhino who wanted to cross the road beside us! Saw various antelope including sable and impala. Went to a different lake today where we saw about 6 hippos, giraffe, Africa fish eagles, impala, rhino, kingfishers, heron... We then saw a couple of elephants feeding off some trees. Still nor more lions or leopard though. Some others saw a leopard yesterday but we missed it by 10 mins! Once back at the camp we...
