Our ride on the bus into Moscow from the ship was long and boring, reminiscent of traffic into Santa Cruz on the 4th of July. It took one hour to travel five miles. Needless to say, most of the passengers fell asleep. I amused myself by translating words on signs from the Cyrillic Alphabet into English. Two examples can be seen in the photographs above. It's interesting to note that Russia didn't know what a traffic jam was until 1990 when the Iron Curtain was lifted, and people began to buy cars. Finally, we made it to the heart of the...

Jun 29, 2007 - Moscow to Yartsevo

Today we were able to sleep in a bit, as we weren't leaving Moscow until around lunch. At one point I'd thought about heading into the Red Square one last time, but instead I just stayed in bed and hung around the hotel until it was time to go! The first stop today was at Borodino where we had time to go to the washroom, see the monument about the Battle of Borodino and walk around for a bit. The battle of Borodino took place during the Napoleonic war, and Ryan told me that it was mentioned in War and Peace, although I had not got that far...

To Russia With Love

Jun 17, 2005 - Yartsevo and Smolensk, Russia

Another quick one-night stop-over in Yartsevoe with a city tour of Somlensk the following morning, all on our way to Moscow. The "hotel" in Novgorod was more like a brothel, with a show and all. The bus driver had bed bugs...quite a quality place to stay!!
