Nat's Adventure 2011

Dec 20, 2010 - I see Red...Square

So we left Irkutsk and Costa, our helpful honcho behind and rolled from Platform 7 into the Siberian night. This was the beginning of the longest leg of our journey from Beijing to Moscow, 5191 kilometres away. The journey would take around 81 hours in which time we would see three sunrises, three sunsets, cross five time zones and one continental line, consume more packets of instant noodles and suspiciously tasteless Chinese sausages than any one should have to. We would play countless rounds of Yaniv, take in a few episodes of Boston...

Sep 2, 2010 - Moscow, Russia - City Day, Kremlin

PLANNING OUR TRIP Our “bible” for any of our trips is the DK Eyewitness Travel books. They proved to be invaluable for our trip to Russia and the Baltic countries. Since we were only traveling to the major cities, we bought city guides rather than country guides. That way we had the most detail for the places we planned to visit. We highly recommend the DK Eyewitness Travel books. Russian Visa As we had previously planned our own one month trip to China, even getting our own visas at the Chinese Embassy, we were quite confident we could do...

Jun 10, 2010 - Moscow to St Petersburg Russia

Got off train about 8.45 am after not much sleep - it is now Thursday 10th June 2010 - went by private bus to M Hotel with English speaking receptionists. Dumped bags, had breakfast, then headed off to river/canal cruise for 2 hours - pretty good. Room so nice, eventually had a shower, also beautiful soft bed and pillow, what luxury and a window which opened. All so clean. Had a wander around St Petersburg, so many canals. Dinner was at a traditional georgian restaurant with the group - menu totally in russian - we had what the others...

Jun 8, 2010 - Suzdal to Moscow Russia

Monday 7th June 2010 - today we leave Suzdal and travel to Moscow - it is raining - always fun travelling in the rain. Elaina is house owner, very nice gentle person, no English - made us a nice breakfast, porridge (big on porridge in Russia it seems), semolina cakes, bread, cheese and ham. It could be a long day today getting to Moscow. Well, we have arrived at accommodation in Moscow - 3.30pm and what a long day it was, lugging our bags on the bus to Vladimir, then the public bus to Moscow then onto the Metro, then through the Metro, up...

Jun 8, 2010 - Moscow

Here I am in Moscow, with Siberia in the rear view mirror, so to speak. The trip on the train went well. It was our most modern one--airplane style toilets this time, so they didn't lock them during the stops! The weather moderated, so no more hot days. Even so, we were all pretty ripe after three days and nights on the train, and showers were a joyful experience! We stopped in Suzdal, a small historic town near Moscow. It was beautiful countryside and lots of little Orthodox churches and cute houses, as well as more modern buildings. We...

Apr 24, 2010 - I Flew To Moscow With The President

Yep that's right, I flew to Moscow with the President... Of Iceland! I didn't see him or anything, what with him being behind that curtain in Business class and all, but if I'd have known, we could have had a good old chin wag about that volcano of his. Which brings me to my sudden exit from the UK to Moscow Thursday evening. I'm sorry to everyone who I had planned to see beforehand and over the weekend until Sunday, but I was worried that Volcano Harry (for the purposes of this blog he shall be Volcano Harry named after myself, as I have...

Mar 3, 2010 - MOSCOW

Hey everyone! I'm here in my hotel room now. It was a very long flight and extremely uncomfortable. The food is awful here in Moscow, but thank goodness We're only here for one more day. Then we'll be in Sochi, which is a more tropical region. We went out to tour downtown Moscow, and the architecture is absolutely beautiful, but it definately isn't what they make it out to be. at least not yet. They have this beautiful center where the czar's castle is and all this bizarre history. the streets are cobblestone and the people are just plain...

Nov 18, 2009 - moskou 2

Oct 17, 2009 - Summer Vacation - Russia/Italy/Croatia

Well, many of you received my updated while I was in Russia, Croatia and Italy but if you did not here is the condensed version. I have added the original note at the end of the update if you are interested. I won't be offended if you don't read (plus I won't know). Sorry it is so long but that is my fault for not sending updates more frequently. The trip was amazing. I was able to see many of the places I have only read about in school and seen on television and to see these places in person was quite surreal. Walking through Red Square,...
