Oct 13, 2016 - A TransManchurian Adventure - Part 2

It’s Thursday afternoon and I’m currently sat at Zabaikl’sk station, the last station in Russia before we cross over the border into China! Last time I wrote was Tuesday morning and we had been on the train for just over two days…. Now 4.5 days in and it really has been incredible. In this journal entry I’m probably not going to write so much in chronological order as, being on a train for this long makes it quite difficult to keep track of what happened when, but I’m just going to mention a few bits and pieces that have happened!...

Aug 28, 2008 - Chita

Jul 21, 2005 - Train to Irkutsk: Day 3

Well it was another entralling day on the train! It's funny I've been reading Sahara by Clive Cussler (I bought it in the airport), and it takes place on the Trans-Saharan, so I thought that was kind of funny. I had planned to read Crime and Punishment or some other gigantic Russian novel, but I never made it to the book store, so Sahara it is. Today my bunkmate slept a little less than yesterday, but he's still incommunicato. I offered hime some dried fruit hoping to strike up a conversation, but I think he said he had plenty of food. Oh...

Jul 21, 2005 - Train to Irkutsk: Day 2

There isn't actually much to report about Day 2 on the train. My bunkmate slept nearly the whole day. I think he got up once to eat and look out the window. So I read some, looked out the window some. I even found the dining car, but I felt a little awkward just sitting there, so I didn't stay too long. The views were nice, lots of birch and aspen forests with creeks and streams. Everything is very green, and it rained in the morning. In the afternoon it got hot and sunny, so I took a nap (thrilling!). Each carriage has a samovar, so there...

Mar 25, 2005 - Priiskovaya train ride

Sasha is a mountain of a man who God seems to have been carved rather too roughly out of a vast human rock forgetting many conventional features like a neck or a curve to the scalp. His arms are vast legs-of-lamb with no hint of a wrist and a dangerous swing that could topple a boxer with a casual swipe. He's travelling eight days by train all the way from the far east to Makhachkala in Dagestan. I enthuse how - if only permits were available - I'd love to visit the region with its dozens of mountain languages and its sagas of the great...

Mar 23, 2005 - Chita

I rolled into Chita for the second time on this trip, welcomed by the truly glorious gold-domes of the new cathedral which is rising on the ashes of a former stadium outside the station. If I had stuck to plan, tonight I'd be off on yet another overnight train for the third consecutive night. But even by my masochistic, unhygienic standards that was looking a bit too much. I was exhausted and filthy and decided to splurge on a hotel room with attached shower for the first time so far. At a cash machine I withdrew a wad of roubles with my...
