We took the bus from Chernivtsi to Suceava, Romania. The bus was recommended as the train takes a long time to change the tracks and search for smugglers. We were warned that there would be a few smugglers on the bus, however it would be a better and easier border crossing than with the train. We arrived at the train station early to get good seats. There was one old man already on the bus, and we could see him sorting cartons of cigarettes between his bag and other, plastic bags. We spent a day with Sebastian visiting four of the painted monasteries of Southern Bucovina, a traditional house, an egg painter and a salt mine at a village called Cacica. Painted monasteries, 1 August Very approximately: the painted monasteries are Orthodox, date from the 16th century (give or take), were used as forts when the Turks were attacking, were closed down by the Habsburgs in the late 18th century and were no more popular with the Communists. Day 48 Tuesday 17 September Romania - Mircesti Hi - Im writing this from a very rustic setting. Im sitting on a cushion on the step at the front of a family house in their front garden. I can hear geese, the family dog is barking at me, someone is chopping wood round the back. Theres kids walking past just come out of school, the occasional horse carriage trots past with gypsys on the back, theres distant hens.
