Jun 9, 2011 - Salty in Cluj

I’d never seen Cluj before, even though I’ve been to Romania a dozen times and heard all about its history, its mix of cultures, and its natural beauty. So when my friend Maria offered to tour me round if I visited, I scratched it into my itinerary. Maria’s in the midst of a wearying carousel of exams and papers, as she finishes her Master’s and prepares to conquer the world. She is accomplished in at least three languages, sits top of her class in international relations, has already had relevant experience in different parts of Europe,...

Jun 7, 2011 - Stung

I’m not sure there’s any point even trying to be sardonic about the Sting concert I attended with Alina last night. I was in the presence of greatness, of an artist at the peak of his craft. He’s past the excessive ego of youth, still in command of every aspect of his talent (including the high notes), with the expressiveness that only age and experience can give. (And that, students, is why Taylor Beefcake-Cheekbones from the Eclipse franchise is not an actor.) Somehow Alina had secured us seats 14 rows from the front, just to the left of...

Sep 29, 2009 - Cluj-Napoca

Took ´1st class´ train from Sighetu to Cluj-Napoca. Extra 8 dollars each resulted in our being in a train car that had worse seats than those in 2nd class ! Toured the ethnological museum in Cluj the next day. Interesting depiction of life in Romania during the past 1000 years, and of the variations in the dress of the various regions/cultures that exist in Romania. Cluj is a vibrant university town, that also has some of the best maintained 19th century buildings we´ve seen in Romania. Our rendezous with Trish & Rick in Siena, Italy draws...

Aug 6, 2007 - Cluj is just as bad as Brasov

Cluj is massive and somewhat disorganised. I got lost due to their signage. Yes twice in one day. So I just kept driving till I came to a sign that said Bucharest. At least that would be in the direction that I needed to go. Eventually I got out but it was now dark and late and I just wanted somewhere to stop. It was after 9pm before I got a room and as they only excepted cash and I was almost out, I was very glad that I had put my 'souvenir' money aside already. With the help of that I had the 95Ron he required and I went upstairs to room...

Sep 30, 2005 - Day 34: Brasov to Cluj.

Another good late 10am departure this morning. Definitely good after my late night. On our way to Cluj, we stopped at a small UNESCO-protected town called Sighisoara. Sebastian gave us a bit of a guided tour and showed us the house where Dracula was born. Then a group of us had lunch at a pub. Then it was back on the road to Cluj. There has been a lot of bus time in Romania with only one night stops and bus travel almost all day everyday. I think everyone's getting a bit stir-crazy. We had dinner at the hotel and then we went to get ready...

Apr 4, 2005 - Kolozsvar

It felt a bit strange arriving in my birth-city of Kolozsvar. My family left here when I was only 4 years old, so I had no true recollection of what it was like, only an imagined expectation that I had conjured up from stories and vague memories. The streets and buildings here are ancient and spectacular, and the architecture is old and decorative and exactly the way I like it. Its a University city, filled with galleries and museums and alive with trendy cafes and small bars and pubs. Kolozsvar dates from the Austro-Hungarian empire, with...
