Sep 18, 2015 - Moving on to Cuzco

Friday. Today was a bit of a wasted day in that we had almost all day free until we needed to be at the train station at 4:50pm. We had tickets to return to Machu Picchu on our own but we decided that we didn't feel the need to do that. After breakfast, we checked out of the hotel but were able to hang around the lobby as long as we wanted. We walked down the steep hill to the town square to see if there was something we wanted to do but as soon as we hit it, the biting gnats attacked! We'd sprayed with insect repellant but it didn't last...

Aug 21, 2015 - Cusco...

So our trusty driver met us at the train station station and transferred us to our beautiful hotel in the cultural heart of Cusco, the Monasterio. As you can well guess this hotel used to be a monastery but was converted to a hotel during the 1960's!! And joy of joys it has a bath, which is the one thing I have been hankering for since we came on holiday!! So ditching the dirty hiking socks, pants and boots, I unashamedly wallowed in a bath... It was late when we arrived, but we wanted to explore a little. We left Toby , who apparently...

Aug 12, 2015 - From the Amazon to Cusco....

And so on Tuesday morning we said goodbye to our little lodge in the Amazon, boarded our boat back to Puerto Maldonado and after a very very short stop at the butterfly farm - photos on previous entry, we checked in for our flight to Cusco. Flight unfortunately was delayed about an hour due to "weather" in Cusco, but thankfully when we were airborne it was for only about 40 minutes a very quick up and down, where our in-flight service was one sweet!! In Cusco it was wet and cold - we just don't seem to be getting this weather right, but our...

Jul 9, 2015 - Leaving Peru and the Girls :(

*Ooo ouch, perhaps one too many rums last night but it was so fun. We went on a walking tour of Cusco with the hostel today - to be honest we have been here over a week now so seen most stuff and a lot was closed due a bus strike. But it was nice being out in the sunshine as today is my last full day with the girls. Also taking in the sights of people selling random things from Pineapple to brooms, the bustling artisan market and loads armed police about. As well as So many crazy dogs here I honestly can't get over the amount and they just...

Jul 8, 2015 - Back in Cusco, leaving the tour, relaxing and partying!

Woohoo I did it - I loved it every second in fact even the millions of stairs! At breakfast everyone was still realing from the past few days. We had to say goodbye so some of team which was sad but Sophie, Hannah, Maive, Naimh and I are all going to the same hostel. The Loki - I have been recommended this one. To get to the Loki you have to walk up about 50 steps, my little legs truly hate me. We went for a walk around the town, having a sandwich and smoothie in the sun and .... Relax. I have one week left of travelling and I intend to...

Jul 2, 2015 - Hello Peru! And your eventful start

At 5.30am we arrived in Cusco, Peru. The bus dropped us off at our hotel. Yes hotel woohoo we are now on a weeks tour to do the Inca Trail and reach Maccu Pichu. The hotel was lovely, the luxury we needed. When we arrived Soph and Hannah were able to check into their room, I was sharing with another girl doing the tour, Madeleine, 19 from Utah. I got into bed with Sophie and we had a couple of hours sleep. When we woke we went to have breakfast, I just had some egg and a tea - my stomach still isn't right! .. Today was our day to do lots...

May 31, 2015 - Home of the Incas

Arrived Cusco Peru Wednesday, flying in through the Andes – mountains all around, not much room for error! Cusco a very cute Spanish style town, formerly the Inca capital, full of tourists but still very pretty. Weather is beautiful – around low 20’s in the day, down to single figures at night – its at 3800m so taking altitude tablets. Looked around town – Inca ruins but most destroyed by Spanish eg built over Inca temples with Catholic churches to show that their religion was superior – this in the 1500’s. Some great restaurants in Cusco –...

Apr 30, 2015 - Cusco Sightseeing and 4 Inca Ruins

I arrived in Cusco last night with Leonor.. We are very happy with the Eco Inn Lodge that is a very upscale place in a good location. Mostly full of tour groups on their way to Machu Picchu. This morning at 8:30 AM we met the rest of the tour group, 10 of us total, and our guide Carlos led us on an uphill walk about 3/4 of a mile to the main market and showed us around for about 2 hours. The altitude is really affecting me. I am taking altitude medicine and drinking the cocoa tea that the hotel provides in the lobby, but I am so tired. Not...

Jan 6, 2015 - Cusco

Today we didn’t need to get up early, so we were quite annoyed when a group of Trekkers were sitting outside the rooms chatting, laughing and then arguing – having no respect or courtesy that other hotel guests were still asleep. Finally I opened our window to ‘enlighten’ them that others are still sleeping and to take their discussions elsewhere. I received a heavily accented ‘sorry’ but other than that my comments fell on deaf ears as they didn’t budge or lower their voices. Finally their transfer came at 7:00am and it was peaceful once...

Jan 2, 2015 - Cusco

We awoke at the crack of dawn – or at least it was light, as the typical grey clouds were covering the skies of Lima. A beautiful singing bird was outside our window, a wonderful sign of summer. Upon checkout we were given a pack lunch as it was too early for breakfast – what a lovely gesture from the Runcu Hotel Miraflores! Our taxi driven again by Luis Carlos arrived promptly at 6:00am and we were at the airport in no time. We thought we were early birds, however the airport was a beehive of activity. As we had checked in online and had...

Jun 24, 2014 - Cusco, Peru

Thursday 19th June 2014 Cusco, Peru When we woke up this morning, because the room we were in didn't have a window, only a skylight, it was impossible to determine what the weather was like outside and also it was noisy because it was above the reception area. Before we went out for breakfast, we asked at reception to have our room changed and they agreed and so we moved to a room on the ground floor near the front door. After all that was resolved, we walked down to the square to have breakfast at a place we saw last night. Today was...

Jun 23, 2014 - Overlanding - Lima to Cusco - Peru

When we finished our last entry on Friday 13th June we were in Lima, we had just met our new group, which consists of a driver/mechanic, a guide and seven clients. This will be until we get to the high mountains and Cusco when we will meet up with another fifteen people. We both had a terrible night's sleep at the hotel in Lima with some major road works going on throughout the night and early morning. We hardly got any sleep and had to get up for an early start the next day so that we could meet "Carmen" our truck (apparently all the...
