Jan 1, 2015 - Lima, Peru

Happy New Year! it was pretty noisy last night with all those partying so we slept in until 9:00am and could have slept longer. Even though it is only a 3 hour time change, it is hard to wake early – especially on vacation! After our breakfast, we strolled along the Malecon which overlooks huge cliffs (barrancos) and the Pacific Ocean. The streets are quite busy with tourists and locals alike and the Pacific is busy with surfers hoping for that big wave. We walked about 3 km until we reached Larcomar Mall, perched on the top of one of the...

Dec 31, 2014 - Lima, Peru

Following a wonderful flight on LAN Airlines from Los Angeles, we arrived at Lima airport shortly after midnight on December 31st. Immigration was quick and as we have only carry on, getting through customs was painless. Our taxi driver, Luis Carlos from the Hotel Runcu Miraflores was waiting patiently for us. The air was delightful and warm, still at 20C! By 1:30am we were at the hotel, checked in and settled in our room. It didn’t take us long before we were sound asleep. At 7:30am Fero nudged me awake as I was in a deep, deep sleep....

Jul 4, 2009 - The day after the big day

From the district of Miraflores in Lima, Peru ... Needless to say, we were tired after last night's events. We slept in until after 11:00am. The overcast skies seemed to make us even lazier. We walked to Cafe Suisse and had a very nice lunch. For 39 soles (about $13 US), we had one of the specials ... french onion soup, chicken in a delicious mushroom sauce, and caramel flan for dessert. After lunch, we went to a couple of department stores and a grocery store and did some more souvenir shopping. In Peru, whenever you are served coffee...

Jul 3, 2009 - The Wedding

From the Miraflores district of Lima, Peru ... Most of our day leading up to the wedding was fairly laid back. We felt really tired today. Could be the hectic pace we’ve been keeping, could be the overcast weather, or maybe a combination of both. After breakfast at the hotel, we walked down a couple of blocks to a check out a grocery store called Metro. This is an upscale grocery like Whole Foods or Fresh Market and is very attractive inside. We enjoyed perusing the aisles of items that were different from what we see in the U.S. One thing...

Jul 2, 2009 - Larcomar on the Pacific Ocean

From the Miraflores district of Lima, Peru ... Today’s weather was more typical for this time of year ... very overcast and cloudy. If we were at home, we would be sure and grab an umbrella before heading out. But here we are assured we will see no rain. Only a heavy mist early in the mornings and occasionally in the evenings at dusk as well. After breakfast in the hotel cafe this morning, we decided to go down to the ocean. We walked several blocks down Jose Larco Blvd. (about a mile). There is a huge Marriott Hotel on the ocean, probably...

Jul 1, 2009 - Lots of sightseeing and dinner at Chili's?

From the Miraflores district of Lima, Peru ... Our day began with breakfast in the hotel’s cafe. A breakfast buffet is included in our stay. We both had made to order omelets which were pretty tasty and some fresh mangos and watermelon. The coffee was hot today! And served with hot milk too! So we’re off to a good start. Next we headed out to do some sightseeing in Miraflores. We were very blessed to have yet another sunny day with blue skies - a rarity in Lima this time of year. We visited the Town Hall which was an amazing building with...

Jun 30, 2009 - Return to Lima

From the Miraflores district of Lima, Peru ... We didn't have to get up until 7:00am today, but I think now we're just in the habit of waking up very early. So we got up around 6:00am and went downstairs to have breakfast in the hotel cafe. The breakfast is very different here, and I can't say I'm crazy about it, but it's not bad. For instance, they serve cold cereal with yogurt ... at least that's what it looks like to me only a little thinner. After breakfast, Charlie and I decided to go back to the market where I purchased some things...
