We'd started the day with a visit to the Nizwa souq where, in the goat souq, a steady procession of goats circle between an inner and outer ring of potential purchasers. When a buyer expresses interest in a particular goat the seller drags it over and the animal is assessed, the legs are felt, fingers are run through the hair and, for billy goats, the buyer extends a hand beneath the animal and gives its balls a good squeeze. Feb 10, 2005 - Sur to Nizwa

The sultan's new mega-dhow was under construction at the Sur dhow yards. He already seemed to have plenty of ships... the harbour at Muscat featured vessels ranging from the royal dhow to what looked like the royal cargo/passenger vessel. So perhaps this new bigger and more ornate dhow was just to keep the dhow builders' skills fine tuned. Except they were all from Kerala in India. Westbound, we sidetripped to Wadi Bani Khalid where again the heavy hand of progress was making an unhappy appearance. Here an ugly road was being shoved...
