Apr 12, 2008 - Westport

Punakaiki, Pancake Rocks NZ's version of the 12 Apostles... pretty neat rock formations, just off the coast and along the coast. They are a mystery no one knows how or why they formed like that. The west coast drive from Franz Joseph to Westport was beautiful, very much like Hawaii. I guess that is where the polynesian part of NZ comes in. Short stay in Westport then off in the am.

Feb 25, 2008 - Murchison to Westport

Murchison to Westport, Monday, February 25 The clouds were down the mountains and it was raining steadily when we got up, looked like a repeat of yesterday. We stopped at Info in town to have a few questions answered: What was the elevation difference between the town-site and top of Skyline Track? Didn't know! What animals are trapped in the traps we say along the Six Mile Lake Track? Stoats and rats. The possums would either be trapped in traps that are off the ground or else poisoned. What are stoats? Small ferret-like animals We were...

Oct 28, 2007 - Westport to Karamea South Island 23 October to 25 October 2007.

Sylvia's Comments Before leaving Westport we drove into the town to do some shopping and see if there was an internet café there. It was a rainy day with grey clouds hugging the hills making them invisible. If it did not clear up we would not be getting many good views on our drive north today. We found an internet shop that also repaired bike; we were not very successful in getting our laptop on to their system but we were able to leave our bikes for a service. After being exposed to the rain, sun and dust of Australia they badly needed...

Oct 25, 2007 - Westport, New Zealand

Drive to Westport.......... We started off the day with a telephone call to John and found all was ok which was a big releaf for us. We also found we had to drive 154 kilometers to get a new motorhome. We didn't do much stopping today because we had no way to secure the motorhome. Susan did look for some jade while I guarded the motorhome. After we got the new motorhome and changed all our stuff into it, it was time to get fuel, some groceries and lunch. Then we stopped at the Pancake Rocks and Blowhole. The rocks are in layers so they look...

Aug 7, 2007 - Arthur's Pass to Westport

My first day on the Kiwi bus was from Christchurch through the sounthern alps to Westport. It was just a long day of driving through the mountains to get to the west coast. New Zealand is so green and beautiful. Parts of it really remind me of back home. It was weird we were driving through lush green scenery and then all of a sudden there was snow everywhere! So we all got off to play in the snow. We also did a waterfall hike that wasn't very exciting. When we got to Westport we had a chance to go jet boating. It was freezing cold and we...

Apr 25, 2007 - Westport - Anzac Day

We left Nelson at 8.30am and made our way along the West Coast to Westport. First we stopped at Nelson Lakes National Park, which was very scenic and there was the option of a walk, but as my knees were hurting again I sat by the lake watching the ducks and marvelling at the view. After people were back from their walk we drove for quite a while, passing through Buller Gorge, where the river quite often floods and has been known to completely cover the road at one point. We then stopped at Buller Adventure tours to sign up for jetboating,...

Apr 21, 2007 - Wow, what a rock!! Oh my god! I am such a blonde (literally and figuratively this time!!)

Well it was off again this morning, no rest for the weary! Stopped for breakfast in Richmond, and the coolest thing happened. Needed to get one of my rings cleaned since it had soap stuck in it, and while waiting for it to be cleaned got to try on a $39,000 diamond ring - gotta say it looked quite big but nice on my finger. Did get just a little nervous when I was having a hard time getting it off my finger, but thankfully it did otherwise I think my credit card would have a heart attack!!! After this excitment, we just walked around a lake...

Apr 11, 2007 - Barrytown to Abel Tasman & Back

This morning I got up and had a walk to the beach and back before calling Stray and the police for any news of my bag...which there was none. I talked to Scoobs the bus driver who said that It was probably in a ditch still. To cut a long story short I borrowed a car, drove back about 400km walked 15km looking for the bag, found it at 5:55, as I was about to give up, in the middle of a small river. I got some help from a bloke in the sawmill next to the river to drag it out and headed back to Barrytown.

Apr 4, 2007 - The West Coast

being as me mate bhav was on the kiwi experience bus i thought i'd shell out a whoppin 300 quid and join him for the ride. basically, you choose a route and buses run it each day so u can get on and off when you want and they'll also book you a hostel and discounted activities if you want them too. day one we were of to westport and i decided to undertake a spot of quad biking en route. i then had to fill out a disclaimer saying that i was liable to pay for any damage to the bikes and all of a sudden i wasn't so cheery. but, suited and...
