After almost a week in Dunedin, it was time to leave and head south along the so called Southern Scenic Route which takes in the entire southern coast of the South Island and a famous national forest reserve called the Catlins. The route runs from Dunedin to Te Anau in Fiordland - 440km in total. Half an hour out of town and we took a walk along Ocean View beach walkway. Mar 7, 2010 - Exploring the Otago Peninsula

With all the work on the van done and dusted (literally dusted!) it was time to see the beach we'd been sleeping close to for the last few days but had had no time to explore. Glorious morning sun shone along St Kilda's and St Clair - Dunedin's main beaches so we did a 2 hour stroll. I wanted to see Baldwin Street in downtown Dunedin - in the Guinness Book of Records as the Steepest Street in the World. At 19 degrees or 1 in 2.86 (i.e. you climb one metre for every 2.86m travelled) at its steepest point, yep you wouldn't want to be cycling...
