Sep 25, 2006 - Whakatane and the East Coast

Today Dan, Edwin and I started our mini road trip up the east coast of the North Island. First off we sorted out getting me on the insurance of the car they had hired, bought a tape adaptor to get some tunes going in the car and off we went. I did all the driving today, so was quite excited as its been a while since I have driven and the roads here are great! With quiet, well maintained, long, straight roads, pretty much the only problem was sticking to the speed limit (at least on the flat or downhill - there was no way of the hire car...

Nov 30, 2005 - Whakatane - great name, great place

Up bright and early to go to meet John and his horses from Nikau Valley Horse Treks. What can we say about John? Well, he met us on the side of the road, as he had driven the horses down in a horsebox. I use that term loosely, but it probably had been a horsebox in a previous life. He casually dropped into the conversation that last time the horses had been ridden was in a 'Brumby' race, and were still a bit 'fired up'. A BIT - Understatement. Di spent most of the time going sideways at a jog. He was about 6'4", but rode a 14.2hh pony. It...

Nov 29, 2005 - On to Whakatane

Left Ocean View after a bracing walk along the beach. Weather was fine, for a change, but chilly. Stopped to look at a church where celebrities apparently queue up to get married. Must admit very picturesque. On our way again, we decided we had to have more retail therapy and by coincidence the Macadamia Nut Factory - known as 'The Nuthouse' was just around the corner! You can tell we were desperate for entertainment! Although we'd scoffed all the nuts on our way up the Cape, we still managed to have a large lunch in Opotiki before heading...

Dec 7, 2004 - Whakatane (pronounced fuckatanee ;-)

My first fishing experience today! Caught a beauty of a red snapper today when I went out with Patrick on his yellow rubber duck boat! Was feeling rather chuffed as he played about with the bait getting stinky and I then reeled in another - a silver kawerau this time! But the man then outdid me with a 5kg snapper which was his biggest catch of the year - so we had fish for lunch, rocket and lemon juice - delicious! He'll smoke some of it too so that'll be good to try. Yup I did meet up with Heather and her two pals, Steffi from Frankfurt...

Nov 27, 2004 - Trippin' around North Island

Hard to believe that I have been in Auckland a week now. Have had a very relaxing yet busy time trippin around North Island. Managed to break my middle toe jumping down from an embarrassing short height at the wrong angle - so yoga has taken a back seat, but it's healed well so no drama there and no excuse tomorrow for getting back to the purple mat. So what have I been up to... Been to a Steiner School Xmas fair - I seem to be bumping into crusty Steiner folk wherever I go - is this a sign to throw away the strip wax? I don't think so...
