Got picked up outside the hostel by the kiwi bus, the driver a rather large guy called Pumba (so called after a character in the lion king). A short trip around the city saw us picking up the rest of the kiwi chaps and then we were off. First stop was at the volcanic hill, Mount Eden, on the outskirts of Auckland offering some great views over the city and a chance to get to know some of the other guys on the bus. Rich Goes Travelling

Jan 21, 2006 - Coromandel

So we made the trip from the Bay of Islands to the Coromandel Peninsula in one fairly smooth ride. There was heavy rainfall through Auckland, but it was the perfect shower for the Mystery Machine. The Coromandel Peninsula is quite different from the Bay of Islands- not as touristy and more remote. The final hour of our trip was composed of very curvy roads going up and down hills. This wasn't too bad, except that the roads were pretty narrow and we're still figuring out our comfort zone with car width on the left side of the road. But as...

Oct 31, 2004 - Coromandel Peninsula and Bay of Islands, New Zealand

Visted the famous Cathedral Cove, a huge rock formation on the beach, and dug our own hot spring on the beach "Hot Water Beach". It was a laugh sitting there and then the tide would come in and wash down the walls so we would have to build it again. The Bay of Islands were really beautiful at the far North of the North Island. We did our usual visit to different thermal springs. We stank afterwards as they are reputed to be the most mineral laden springs in New Zealand.
