Apr 7, 2017 - Paihia, New Zealand

Friday, April 7, 2017 Paihia, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to.” - Alan Keightley Woke up with the alarm at 7. It didn’t get so cold overnight so that was nice. Temp this morning is quite pleasant and there were even a few glimpses of sun for a while. Then a shower passed through again….sigh. I got up and had a great plan: Go put our breakfast pies in the oven in the kitchen and then go in the bathroom in the next room...

Dec 4, 2016 - Paihia

Bay of Islands We had a few stops en route - First one was Orewa beach..which had a gorgeous wide beach and a busy little town ..had a quick pit stop here then on to the bay as didn't want to miss check in but somewhere to definitely come back to. Second stop was at Whanganui which is a sizeable town which seems to sprawl for miles Our apartment was lovely - very high up on the hillside but spacious and with great views. We unpacked, settled in and had a bit of a wander reminiscing about Christmas here 9 years ago ! The weather was much...

Dec 28, 2015 - Bay of Islands

Took our time driving north up to the Bay of Islands as the holiday traffic makes the going slow. Spent nights in Hamilton and Whangarei, though did not do any touristy stuff. Also only passed thru Auckland on the Route 1 highway without stopping. We'll be back to Auckland to finish our time in New Zealand. Arrived in Pahia on the western side of the Bay of Islands. It is getting pretty quiet now as everyone has gotten to their Christmas celebration site. Businesses are also starting to close for the holidays. Gone are the days of cold....

May 8, 2015 - Last day in North Island

Friday 8th May 2015 A nice leisurely start to a wet and overcast morning. The weather forecasts have been very accurate, and the predicted rain during the night duly arrived. Our first stop for the day was at the harbour shops for the men to check out some rain jackets they'd seen previously. The shop assistant was very helpful, and darted between their two shops getting the right sizes, and we eventually left with two jackets. Had thought about heading north to Manganui, but changed our minds and headed south to see something different....

May 7, 2015 - Heading to the West for a day

Thursday 7th May 2015 Weather report was for a cloudy day with a few showers, then rain at night. A little showery early, but decided it was worth heading for the west coast. Seemed the wrong decision a little way into the trip, but then it cleared to a nice day. Our first stop was Wairere Boulders, chosen by John. One would say that Mavis was not too impressed with the choice as we started along the road into the boulders. After a stop to check we were on the right road (via John & Thomas), we continued on for the 12 kms, not sure what we...

May 6, 2015 - Kerikeri

Wednesday 6th May 2015 A sleep in and a more leisurely start to the day. Much appreciated. Ventured out just before 10am and headed towards Kerikeri. First stop was the Rusty Tractor on Kerikeri Road. Nice morning tea where the scones (cheese and date) were big enough to share between three people. John ordered a donut thingy, called a "keoksister" but it sounded like "twin sister". It's a very rich Sth African sweet with a mixture of what appeared to be honey/maple syrup. Across the road from the Rusty Tractor was a Persimmon Orchard, well...

May 5, 2015 - Cape Reinga Tour

5th May 2015 Managed our early start well, up at 5.30am and on the road at 6.45am. Lovely sunrise and very foggy for a lot of the way. Followed Highway 1 to Kaitaia where the Cape Runner Tour started. Had time to grab a quick coffee in town, and be on the bus to leave at 9am. A very pretty drive, but also a highway with lots of bends. Left Kaitaia with 10 passengers, picked up two hitchhikers at the Ancient Kauri Kingdom, and the two more at the 90 mile beach caravan park. The tide determines which way we go to the Cape, so the beach part...

May 4, 2015 - Hole in Rock cruise

Monday 4th May 2015 Woke to another very pleasant day, and departed the wharf at 9am for our cruise around the bay. Cruised by many islands with lots of history. Some islands are privately owned, and we could apply to be caretakers if so desired. Did a mail and grocery drop to Motuarohia Island. Watched a good size pod of dolphins early in the cruise, and although some people were prepared to hop in for a swim with them, they did not play ball and come to the right place to allow a swim. Lots of rules and regulations, so it's up to the...

May 3, 2015 - Paihia and Kerikeri

Sunday 3rd May 2015 A leisurely start to the day with bacon and eggs for breakfast. We went to a 10am morning tea talk by different tour operators in the area. We then decided to do our bookings at the tour desk here, and chose the half day Dolphin Cruise to the Hole in the Rock for Monday morning at 9am. We can leave that tour at Russell (the site of first capital of NZ) on the way back, have a look around there and catch the passenger ferry back to Paihia when we are ready. Our second booking was for Tuesday morning, leaving here by 7am...

May 2, 2015 - Waiomu to Bay of Islands

Saturday 2nd May 2015 Enjoyed our night right on beach front at Waiomu. John up early and off to local cafe to buy takeaway breakfast for all of us. A "back in time place", where John found the girl very excited about their new menus, especially as they had been laminated! John & Don had bacon and egg sandwiches, Mavis a bacon sandwich, and Pam some pancakes. All very nice, but a challenge for them as these things were not on the set menu! After some prompting from John, he was able to get our order filled!! Pam had asked for raisin toast,...

May 3, 2014 - New Zealand - The last few days in the north

Our last few days in New Zealand When we left you it was Thursday 24th April, we had just been to Hobbiton and were heading to Northland. We spent most of Thursday driving. We drove around Hamilton, through Auckland and had a short lunch break at a waterfall before continuing to the northern capital Whangarei where we booked into a campsite in the late afternoon. The next day we planned to reach the end of the sealed road at the top of north island at Cape Reinga. You can get slightly further north but it would have involved driving onto...
