Jan 15, 2013 - Waiheke Island

Happy birthday Clint! We started our day off early with a hike to the top of mount Eden. We were just able to catch the last bit of the sunrise, which was beautiful. The views from the top were great as well. You could see 360 degrees, right to downtown Auckland and out to the ocean. The mountain is an old volcano that had erupted and at the top you can see the crater where the top blew off. After we got down, we made our way to the Auckland Jetty (wharf) where we hopped on the ferry and took the 40 ride over to Waiheke Island. This island...

Oct 29, 2012 - Waiheke in the wain

We woke this morning to buckets of rain falling but we are on holidays so it's all good. After waiting for a while to see if the rain gods would take pity on us (they didn't) we ventured forth and went for a walk about town. Town is not much bigger than a minute (about 3 blocks long) so it didn't take us long to exhaust all our efforts at checking out every knicknack on the shelves. Oct 28, 2012 - good thing we have unlimited km!!!!!!

Up early today, do we sound like a broken record? The girls went for a run and we hiked down by the river to get some photos. We packed up and headed back to Auckland to get Mel to her flight home. Mel had arranged with Miro (the shuttle bus driver that we are now on a first name basis with!) to meet us at the bike shop that had agreed to store the girls bikes after the tri until they were ready to head to Canada. It all started to go bad when we rolled up to the bike shop and they didn't seem to know anything about a bike storage. The...

Feb 23, 2008 - Wine tasting on Waiheke...in the rain!!!

Saturday 23rd February We were collected from our hostel by Karen, Aaron and Solange to take us to the ferry to the island of Waiheke to go do a 5 1/2 hr wine tasting tour.....yay! The weather was a bit dismal to say the least which led to an interesting 35 min ferry ride to Waiheke. At 93sq km, Waiheke is the largest of the Hauraki Gulf Islands (of which there are 47 in total) and is located to the East of Auckland City. Waiheke's many fine beaches and picturesque bays (and normally good climate) make it a great place to relax and serves...
