Mar 29, 2017 - Napier, New Zealand

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 Napier, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Oh the places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss Well, for those of you who waded through yesterday’s diatribe, today’s will be better - not great but definitely better! For those who skipped reading yesterday, just suffice it to say that my refrigerator doesn’t work and it’s been raining nonstop for 4 days…. So, we woke up to another rainy day in Tauranga. It had rained all night long and was loud on the roof of the campervan; I think this one is a thinner roof than Amanda’s...

Feb 20, 2017 - Napier

Early start today for our excursion to Napier. Had our photo taken with one of the locals and a classic car. Napier is an Art Deco town. It was rebuilt in that style after the earthquake in the 1930s. We toured the town area, had a walk around, had presentation and then left to visit Te Mata peak. This was a big climb for the coach, but we'll worth it. Views were spectacular. Elton John experience was fantastic. He has been invited to appear at the UK tribute festival in Yorkshire in the summer. He also is friends with the girl who did...

Jul 22, 2016 - Our final NZ travels

We are on our final few weeks of our time in NZ. It is not going to be fun saying goodbye but we hope to have some exciting travels on the way home. As you can see we are not doing much to improve attendance levels for NZ schools but we are having a great time with the cuzzies!! We are all staying in Loretta's new house for a few days in Havelock North so all the cousins can have some fun together. Oscar has stayed at home with his mum and dad though as it was a bit too far away for him.

Our Year Out

Apr 6, 2016 - Havelock North

Overlooking Havelock North is Te Mata peak and today there were brilliant views out to the sea and back to the hills. Apparently you can see Ruapehu but there were some low clouds over the ranges. We then drove on to Waimarama- a scenic drive and a long, wide, sandy surf beach for a good run around on.

Our Year Out

Apr 3, 2016 - Havelock North and Napier

We are staying with Phill's brother David, Susan, Madeline and Claudia at their lovely house in Havelock North. We have been having a great catch up and look around the local area. Nanna and Poppa have joined us now and there are plenty of plans for chocolate factory visits, vineyards, Cape Kidnappers and farmers' markets. Poor Claudia and Maddie have to go to school but hopefully we can do lots of afternoon stuff. At the very least there will be more after school visits to Rush Monroe's ice cream parlour!

Our Year Out

Feb 28, 2016 - Napier

Wednesday 10th February, today our destination is Napier “Art Deco Capital of the World”. Really been looking forward to Napier, as sounds a really interesting place, was devastated by an earthquake on 3rd February 1931 and totally rebuilt in the Art Deco style. Our journey there took us via Lake Taupo but after that point were on new ground. The journey between Taupo and Napier was the most dramatic yet, travelling through a mountainous range reminiscent of the French Alps, very twisty and windy with striking countryside. Our faith in...

Feb 9, 2016 - Mo gets sick

Mo started to get a bad cough while we were in India. The air pollution is so epic that many in our group had coughs, sore throats, and related ailments. Jim developed a cough, but his went away in Singapore. Mo's cough did not go away in Singapore nor so far in New Zealand. In addition, she came down with a wicked cold. As she has a history of bronchitis, she decided she needed medical care. I-sites are local tourist information offices. They provide a wide array of information and services from simple directions to booking hotels or...

Feb 7, 2016 - Taihape to Napier.

Set off from Taihape to find a road across the mountains to Napier. Evidently the road has only just been sealed and is supposed to be very picturesque and hairy! Sure enough the scenery is lovely and starts off being very like the previous drive we had just done over the mountains but eventually changed to become huge mountains covered with native plants so really gave you an idea of what it must have looked like years ago before it was all cleared. It obviously has yet to be classified as a tourist route like most roads in NZ are, as there...

Jan 25, 2016 - Napier

An easy road out of Taupo. We stopped at a triple waterfall with a fourth waterfall beside it. Little traffic and we headed straight to a campsite within Napier. 144km today. After lunch at the van we walked into the town centre. Mostly Art Deco buildings from when the town was rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in Feb 1931. We are going to do a guided tour tomorrow. Hot walk back to the van, in the high 20's today.

Dec 23, 2015 - Napier, New Zealand

Pete had a good visit in Napier today. Napier felt the brunt of a devastating earthquake in 1931 and, as a result of the rebuilding at that time, is the home of many fine examples of art deco architecture. It is located in an area called Hawkes' Bay, known for wine production. Everything is going well for Pete right now.

The ship is stopping at a different New Zealand port every day for several days in a row right now, which gives Pete a chance to get off the ship and enjoy the local cuisine. His picture from Napier shows that he is enjoying the local beer, too! We have enjoyed sending him news about our winter weather - the temperature in Napier today is 80.

Feb 5, 2015 - Art deco abounds in Napier

Once again, the resourceful Kiwis have turned tragedy into triumph. Following yet another devastating earthquake in 1931, they rebuilt the city in art deco style; clean lines, light colors, maritime themes. Some of you will remember that we just recently visited the US art deco capital of Miami, and found a beloved art deco happy hour at Lena's with Bob O'Rourke in Ann Arbor, MI. Needless to say, we have fallen head-over-heels for this architecture. While we came to Napier and the Hawke's Bay area for the wine, we were delighted to discover...
