Apr 21, 2017 - April 21, 2017 – Napier, North Island, New Zealand

April 21, 2017 – Napier, North Island, New Zealand This town was destroyed by a strong earthquake on February 9, 1931. Only 4 buildings were left standing after a 7.8 earthquake which lasted for 2.5 minutes. There were many aftershocks which followed. Many of the buildings were not only damaged by the quake but were completely destroyed in the fire which followed. The houses which were on the hillside survived because they were not in the path of the fire. A Navy ship had been in harbor for just a short time when the quake occurred. The bay...

Apr 18, 2017 - Napier, Hawke's Bay.

I spent the long Easter weekend down in Hawke's Bay and absolutely fell in love with Napier, the Art Deco capital of the world. It is such a beautiful little seaside town and it really felt like stepping back in time. Really interesting history too cause it is the product of a huge earthquake back in the 1930s which caused the land to rise by 2m which drained a lagoon where Napier now stands. It pretty much rose out of the sea! I stayed a little outside of Napier in a place called Te Awanga near 4 of the Hawke's Bay vineyards and spent an...

Well, that was just a great night’s sleep…..biking that far and a belly full of good Indian food will do that to you! Woke up with the alarm at 7am to another beautiful sunny day in Napier. Hurray...

Saturday, April 1, 2017 Napier, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Life is a highway and I want to ride it….all night long.” - Tom Cochrane And, as the case may be, all DAY long too…...LOL! Slept really well with the sound of the ocean waves gently crashing….I could use that as my sleep machine sound for sure! Woke up at 7:30 am to another nice day; a few morning clouds so not as cloudless as yesterday but still a very good day. Temp is probably mid 60s in the morning so just a bit cool, long sleeved tshirt for a couple hours maybe. Had...

Friday, March 31, 2017 Huamoana, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Travel makes one modest. You see what a tiny place you occupy in the world.” - Gustave Flaubert Art got up this morning at 7:15 and I slept a few minutes longer till 7:45. We woke up to a stunning day in Napier - just beautiful sunshine and nary a cloud in the sky. It was just a bit cool, maybe mid 60s to start but you could tell it was going to be a great day! We ate some breakfast (Art got a vanilla and almond cereal that was actually pretty good) and had tea/coffee....

Thursday, March 30, 2017 Napier, New Zealand (night 2) TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Take only memories, leave only footprints.” -Chief Seattle Woke up to showers still on the roof of the van. So Art got up at 7:15 but let me roll back over and sleep till 8:15. Nice! By the time I got up, it was starting to break up a little bit and look like the weather might get better but still it was showery. Got dressed. No breakfast in the house because of the *#&$*@ refrigerator, so we needed to head into town anyway. Packed up and drove into the city of...

Wednesday, March 29, 2017 Napier, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Oh the places you’ll go.” - Dr. Seuss Well, for those of you who waded through yesterday’s diatribe, today’s will be better - not great but definitely better! For those who skipped reading yesterday, just suffice it to say that my refrigerator doesn’t work and it’s been raining nonstop for 4 days…. So, we woke up to another rainy day in Tauranga. It had rained all night long and was loud on the roof of the campervan; I think this one is a thinner roof than Amanda’s...

Feb 20, 2017 - Napier

Early start today for our excursion to Napier. Had our photo taken with one of the locals and a classic car. Napier is an Art Deco town. It was rebuilt in that style after the earthquake in the 1930s. We toured the town area, had a walk around, had presentation and then left to visit Te Mata peak. This was a big climb for the coach, but we'll worth it. Views were spectacular. Elton John experience was fantastic. He has been invited to appear at the UK tribute festival in Yorkshire in the summer. He also is friends with the girl who did...

We are on our final few weeks of our time in NZ. It is not going to be fun saying goodbye but we hope to have some exciting travels on the way home. As you can see we are not doing much to improve attendance levels for NZ schools but we are having a great time with the cuzzies!! We are all staying in Loretta's new house for a few days in Havelock North so all the cousins can have some fun together. Oscar has stayed at home with his mum and dad though as it was a bit too far away for him.

Our Year Out

Apr 6, 2016 - Havelock North

Overlooking Havelock North is Te Mata peak and today there were brilliant views out to the sea and back to the hills. Apparently you can see Ruapehu but there were some low clouds over the ranges. We then drove on to Waimarama- a scenic drive and a long, wide, sandy surf beach for a good run around on.

Our Year Out

Apr 3, 2016 - Havelock North and Napier

We are staying with Phill's brother David, Susan, Madeline and Claudia at their lovely house in Havelock North. We have been having a great catch up and look around the local area. Nanna and Poppa have joined us now and there are plenty of plans for chocolate factory visits, vineyards, Cape Kidnappers and farmers' markets. Poor Claudia and Maddie have to go to school but hopefully we can do lots of afternoon stuff. At the very least there will be more after school visits to Rush Monroe's ice cream parlour!

Our Year Out

Feb 28, 2016 - Napier

Wednesday 10th February, today our destination is Napier “Art Deco Capital of the World”. Really been looking forward to Napier, as sounds a really interesting place, was devastated by an earthquake on 3rd February 1931 and totally rebuilt in the Art Deco style. Our journey there took us via Lake Taupo but after that point were on new ground. The journey between Taupo and Napier was the most dramatic yet, travelling through a mountainous range reminiscent of the French Alps, very twisty and windy with striking countryside. Our faith in...
