Feb 22, 2014 - Oamura to Methven

Fri 21st Feb…………… Oamura to Methven ……………… Off to Methven today as it’s supposed to be a more scenic route inland then the coastal one. We come through a place called Timaru which we recall had a lovely boardwalk along the beach but was spoiled by a big port at the far end .Evidently a huge amount of money has been spent on improving the beach area, extending the board walk and planting grasses to protect the dunes and they have made a lovely job of it and created a lovely walk though the park towards the town taking in some “famous rose...

Feb 6, 2014 - Mount Hutt

Mount Hutt Once away from the mountains the scenery was unremarkable, even boring. Large expanses of moraine materials with little vegetation and that was brown and dry and very few trees. We drove on through Burkes Pass, a fairly low pass by recent standards but the weather deteriorated rapidly and we were in the tclouds and rain for some time. We arrived at Fairlie, a small town at the edge of the Canterbury Plains and getting out of the camper found that is was cold, a complete contrast to yesterday. We found a little bakery and bought...

Oct 15, 2012 - Whats up? Winter is...

Warning! I know this update is past its intended date...but before I finish my new one from the past week and a bit I thought I would post this separately and leave its authenticity, as it was written in the past. It gives what was going on more mid October. Enjoy! Now its October, and two months since my last update although I said in my last one I would update more often, yet I have followed suit of previous entries and left it long. But I guess it makes it more interested, that’s if anyone actually still is keen on reading anymore....

Well we had our last night with Bob and Evelyn and we stayed again up in their beautiful house in Wainui,on the way we stopped and stripped one or two trees of a huge amount of plums both red and yellow. we all went out for a meal into akaroa and found this fabulous restaurant and had a great meal with a wonderful bottle of wine called Fossil Ridge from Nelson where we will be going later in the holiday so we will try to pick some up then. We went back to Christchurch the next day and had our last night in Rob and Evelyn's place before we...

Hiking New Zealand

Mar 28, 2011 - Mt Somers hIKE FROM HELL

Today we set out to hike Mt. Somers in the rain...we prepared with goretex jackets and pants and waterproof hiking boots. However, nothing could've prepared us for the MUD we encountered...it was slicker than shit..We all hiked steadily uphill getting dirter and muddier by the minute..After 30 min, my roommate, Lois, decided enough was enough. She turned back with 3 smart people...the rest of us morons persisted straight up the mountain..slip sliding away...this song now has new meaning for me..big time! anyway we made to our lunch spot and...

Mar 26, 2011 - Pancake Rocks-Tranzalps train-Methven

WE TOOK the bus from KAREMEA to Greymouth..along the way we stopped to hike and view the Pancake rocks formed by the sea and wind...limestone rock layered like pancakes at IHOP but many more than you could possibly eat!! Unfortunately it wasn't high tide so we couldn't watch the water being blown through the blow holes in these magnificent rocks. We had lunch at an ale house in greymouth...one of the largest cities on the west coast of the south island. Then we took the tranzalpine train to Springerville and then another bus to...

Hiking New Zealand

Jul 11, 2009 - Methven, New Zealand

We've moved about an hour south of Christchurch to the little town of Methven. While the town itself seems to be nice and friendly, the main draw for us here is the ski fields on Mt Hutt. We'll be staying here for 10 days, and starting Monday, the kids are both enrolled in ski camp programs that will be going on for most of next week. Downtown Methven It's the first day here and this morning we woke up to a beautiful blue sky and huge snow-covered mountains out the bedroom window. After a quick stop at the tourist I-site in town, we...

Kim's Blog 2009

Nov 5, 2005 - Methven & Washpen Falls

By four o'clock we had found our resting place for the evening. Methven is a town that's main draw is the ski fields of Mt Hutt. As we approach summer the snow could only be seen on a few distant peaks and the YHA was virtually empty of guests. The helpful managed George was able to direct us to Washpen Falls. Somewhere we had never heard of but his descriptions of what he termed as the best walk he had ever done made us determined to see for our selves. After a few wrong turns, we find ourselves on Washpen Farm talking to the 3rd...
