A suggestion from Jacqui & Chris had us heading south east to Whakatane (fa-ka-ta-ne) in the Bay of Plenty region. This was to be our jumping off point to visit NZ's most active volcano - White Island. After our heli-hike experience (or rather lack off) in Franz Josef we were a little nervous about booking a helicopter trip over to the island, but risk it we did! Thankfully, this time around it paid off; Sunday AM, blue skies - more than perfect conditions! Yes! all excited we boarded our little euro-copter (or squirrel) to spend some time...

Jan 30, 2007 - White Island und die Bay of Plenty

Die "Bay of Plenty" hatte sich ihren Namen schon verdient, als wir in einem Hostel eingeladen wurden uns im Obst- und Gemuesegarten zu bedienen. Wir assen die wohl besten Tomaten der Welt und zogen mit mindestens 3 Kilo Pflaumen weiter nach Opotiki, wo die Region ihrem Namen dann alle Ehre machte. Wir fanden uns in einem Hostel wieder, das karibische Gefuehle aufkommen lies - morgens konnten wir aus dem Bett aufs Meer schauen... "White Island" - einer der aktivsten Vulkane Neuseelands - ueberwaeltigte uns dann vollkommen. Die ganze Insel...

Apr 25, 2006 - Napier to Whakatane

HAPPY ANZAC DAY It was pouring with rain when we woke up so we now had to make a huge decision. We had planned to take the scenic road via Gisborne and around the East Coast. Well there was just no point as we weren't going to see what nature wanted to show us. It's well known for the beautiful beaches on this wild coast and there are small rural Maori communities scattered along the coast. We stopped in Gisborne for lunch at one of the very few cafe's that were open - its Anzac Day and there is nothing else open. It this was anywhere else...
