Jul 14, 2016 - Not bogged today...Just relaxing

What a horrible night...We had heavy rain & lots of wind. The van was getting shaken around terribly...Needless to say I didn't get a good nights sleep...The rain did stop in the early hours of the morning & when we eventually got up it was beautiful blue skies. Headed just down the road to the Tekapo Springs area. Here they have an outdoor Ice Skating ring, a Tube Ride & Hot Pools. All this overlooking the lake & snow capped mountains. The boys went Tubing for about 1 hour. This is a man made slope, you hop in an inflatable tube & get...

Jul 13, 2016 - Queenstown to Lake Tekapo

After another full night of rain we packed up & hit the road just before 10.00 on our way towards Lake Tekapo. The day got interestering even before we had left Queenstown, with some person deciding they wanted to turn in front of us as we were going straight through a green light...Very nearly hit her... The weather eased as the day went on & it was quite nice driving. About half way through our journey (in the middle of nowhere) we were asked to pull over to the side of the road, as they were transporting a 10.5m wide house. No problems,...

Mar 23, 2016 - Lake Tekapo

Over the last few days we have travelled from Dunedin out to a little place near Alexandra where we did the middle section of the Otago Cycle Trail. It was a really warm afternoon and the scenery was amazing- vast open spaces, moorland and pasture, tunnels and bridges. The track was a bumpy gravel and we ended up doing 61km! This was slightly further than we intended but we ran out of water so had to make it to the next township and tavern! To say we were exhausted is an understatement! Driving on up to Mt Cook village to see the Edmund...

Our Year Out

Mar 2, 2014 - Lake Tekapo

This morning, while stowing things for travel, a bracket broke. It is needed to hold the table leg in place. So I called back to Christchurch, and arranged to bring it in this afternoon. We needed to go back by Christchurch today anyway, so it was not a huge detour. First, however, we drove down to town and took a walk through Akaroa. It is a very small town dependent on tourists, so it had the usual shops and restaurants. A cruise ship was in the harbour, so there were plenty of customers. We were watching the harbor when we saw a man...

Mar 1, 2014 - DAY 6: Christchurch to Lake Tekapo

Picked-up the motorhome this morning - a Swift Bolero 682 FB. Absolutely brilliant - brand new (we are only the second people to use it!), and superbly prepared and presented by Iconic Motorhomes. After stocking-up at a nearby supermarket we headed for our first campsite at Lake Tekapu. We arrived at about 6pm, leaving just enough time for a quick sprint up to the top of Mount John, with lovely views over the lake before the evening sun faded. We celebrated our first day on-the-road with a bottle of NZ Pinot Noir bubbles when we got back to...

Mar 21, 2013 - Lake Tekapo

Another very cold night with temperatures just above freezing was followed by another nice warm day. We drove to the town of Lake Tekapo on the lake of the same name. Population 500. Near Lake Tekapo is Mt John that has an observatory on its peak. We drove up there for a view of the surrounding countryside. We had Lake Tekapo on one side and Lake Alexandrina on the other from 1.029 metres up. Very nice. The road going up Mt John was very steep and windy. At the top of Mt John I saw a small reptile called a NZ Skink. Besides birds, the...

Jun 18, 2011 - NZ Blog Two - Lake Tekapo

Tuesday 14 June 2011 Christchurch After being woken by a strong 4.7 tremor earlier in the night (and yes the earth did move for us in bed) we were eventually up and at ‘em after sending our emails and blog. We decided to head out of the city (no surprise here) and take a drive to Akaroa which is about an hour or so south east of Christchurch and was colonised by the French and even now has a distinctly French feel with the street names and businesses having French names. The drive was very scenic and a lot more turns and twists and slower...

May 20, 2011 - Houston we have lift off!

We have just got ourselves organised after a less than positive start to our trip to New Zealand. Unfortunately our initial flight was cancelled but we were not informed. Fortunately Eva double-checked the flight times the night before and discovered that the flight did not exist. After a frantic phone call, it emerged that we were booked on a later flight. Great that we didn’t have to get up so early but bad in that we would now arrive too late to pick up our campervan, so needed to book a hostel for the night. The hostel was not the best...

Where's Jolly?

Jul 24, 2010 - Boulders and Lake Tekapo

After our quick walk up the street we went to visit the Moreaki Boulders on some beach. Not entirely sure why they're there to be honest, think they were formed by the sea. We then continued on to Lake Tekapo - which is by far and a way the prettiest place I have seen so far. The lake iteslf is so still and calm and reflects the snowy mountains. There is also a really pretty church on the lakeside - the Church of Good Shephard. After a walk along the lake with Rita we came back and I headed to the hot pools/spa 3 minutes up the road from my...
