Mar 9, 2012 - Lake Hawea

Next morning. The sunrise was not significant BUT THE COLD WAS!!!! After dressing I had to get back into bed to warm up. There was ice on the windscreen of the next door neighbour’s car. Daniel, I had to put on your thermal leggings under my thickest tracksuit bottoms. I had four layers on my top but that was not good enough, so I took one off and had a woollen jumper next to my skin, a long sleeve shirt, our new snow gum coats, gloves and Alicia’s hat. I still started cold on our Kea Walk. The sun reached us from the shadows. The higher we...

Feb 15, 2012 - The West Coast

We've spent the last few days working our way down the West Coast - a very beautiful area of wild black sand beaches, towering mountains and glaciers. There was some cloud on the tops some days, but we still managed to get a good view of the mountains - though we didn't climb any! We spent half a day kayaking through the Okarito wetlands. We starting crossing the tidal lagoon and seeing white herons and other birds up close. Then we went through channels in a marshy area and finally into the forest itself. The three areas were very...

Aug 8, 2008 - Cardrona ski field

We've finally started snowboarding again and it's been amazing so far. This year the snow has been far better than last. The weather on most days has been perfect, clear blue skies and not too cold. This is great for the snow, it softens it up nicely. You thought the Brits talked about the weather all the time, you should try living in a ski resort! About 90% of our conversations are about whether it's snowed, the visability, the wind, it's constant! We've had a great few days so far, we tend to meet a group of friends and all go out...

Feb 29, 2008 - Haast to Cromwell

Haast to Cromwell, February 29, 2008 We headed east on Highway 6 along the Haast River, a braided river in a wide gravel bed. It was raining steadily but the road was good and we were able to drive along at a pretty good speed. Waterfalls were visible along the valley walls beautiful with great gushed dropping steeply before draining into the river. Several single lane bridges crossed streams as we drove along. We didn't stop for any photo ops due to the weather however on a sunny day these stops would have been frequent and well worth it....

Oct 24, 2004 - Wanaka

JG It's a real shame, New Zealand is obviously stunning but the rain means we haven't been able to see as much of the S Island as we would have liked. Having said that we arrived in Wanaka with blues skies, fluffy clouds, a beautiful lake and snowy mountains and that's the view from our apartment. Upgraded AGAIN but worth the view! Gorgeous little town with great cafes and shops. TS - Wanaka was picture-perfect. Beautiful scenery, quite a small place, and very few tourists. Our room was amazing looking onto the Lake and the mountains, and...
