Headed north in the morning up to the Oparara Basin - karst country with limestone caves, arches and gorges galore. After quite a long drive up the road to Karamea, the route eventually took me on to a gravel road for the last 16km (is a gravel road and unsealed road? if it is I don't think I should have taken my car up there but never mind!) so I had a lot of fun driving through the forest avoiding potholes and generally making a lot of effort in keeping the car on the road! We decided to head to the north of the west coast to a little visited but beautiful place called Karamea. Our friends from Nelson Bruce and Marg have a bach (holiday home) here and we knew that Marg would be helping out in the towns one shop so thought we'd go and surprise her. Karamea is a special place, everyone knows everyone and is really genuine and friendly. It's a pity that more travellers don't visit, but then again maybe not.
