living the dream

Apr 28, 2008 - Invercargill

Driving to Invercargill we made lots of stops along the Catlins Coastal route. Our first was Nugget point where we walked to a light house and saw 2 dolphins and some seals. At another stop, Surat Bay, we saw lots of sealions lazing on the beach. We lastly stopped at Curio Bay where we failed to see some more dolphins but waited for a while to see a couple of rare yellow eyed penguins return from fishing and to their nest on the site of a fossilised forest. We arrived in Invercargill, also a Scottish town, once beiing the fastest shrinking...

Jan 2, 2008 - Manapouri to Invercargill South Island 14th to 17th December 2007.

Sylvia's Comments After saying good-bye to our POP hosts we were back on the Southern Scenic road again travelling along side the Waiau River, between the forested Takitimu and Hunter Mountains, leaving the snow-capped Kepler Mountains behind. Our first stop was at the Clifden Suspension Bridge which was built in 1899. A short road leads to the bridge and we parked the van and had a walk across it. The bridge spans 366 feet above the Waiau River and stands today as a memorial to those who built it. It claimed fame as being the longest...

Dec 30, 2007 - Invercargill, NZ

The ship leaves from the fishing port of Bluff, which is a half hour drive from Invercargill. I am travelling on MV Orion If you click on the tab SHIP you will get all the detail on the ship, and there is also a BRIDGE CAMERA. My cabin in on Deck 3. The boat is fantastic! Arrived on board late afternoon. After a champagne welcome, I went to my cabin to settle in. We had a safety briefing and then a welcome cocktail party. The ship set sail at 1900 hours. I had dinner and adjourned to my cabin around 2200 hours. Rocky night, but got some...

Apr 3, 2007 - "Tell Em' You're staying with Lord..."

I arrived in Bluff somewhat late in the day hoping to sample some of what it is most famaous for...Oysters. I tried several places with no luck. It seems mst of the oysters are sold to other restaurants and markets elsewhere in the world and in New Zealnd. Not wanting to be shut out, I stopped and asked an ancient road surveyor and his wife if he knew where I might find some around town (When I say ancient, I'm referring to the surveyor and not the road!) He really wasn't sure, but after chatting for a whi;e, he found out I was gong to...

Reilly on the Road

Apr 2, 2007 - The Catlins Coast and the elusive yellow-eyed penguin

As it turns out, the sausage capital of New Zealand has only one restaurant in the whole town that churns out this stuff - what a hoot! As we had our fill the night before we decided to skip the restaurant experience and get back on the road. We were looking forward to getting onto the Southern Scenic Route; we had been told it was a beautiful drive along the southern coast. We drove and drove some more, stopping in little towns along the way; my favorite was Riverton. It was the cutest little seaside town you have ever seen, like the towns...

Mar 28, 2007 - Invercargill (Her story)

Though I spent 5 days in Invercargill I didn't get to see anything of the town. D reassures me that I haven't missed anything and so I'll be happy to let it sit comfortably on the very short list of places to which I hope never to return. The surgeon enthusiastically told me that I'd broken the most painful bone of the body and being quite a hospital veteran (having previously fractured my skull, collar bone, wrist, toe, dislocated my shoulder and undergone major back surgery) I can verify that I have never known pain like it. Apparently,...
