Mar 1, 2017 - Back together

Mark worked in Waipukerau on the North Island in 1975 and toured the South Island in that time. I lived in Auckland in the late 70s and returned for a hitchhiking tour with friends in 1979. But we've never visited NZ together so finally we have made it. This trip was planned for 1 March 2016 but for various reasons, didn't happen. So on 1 March 2017, take two. The 2016 Christchurch earthquake and drought and bushfires this month have added complications but for travellers, nothing like what the locals have experienced. So our plans have...

Jul 1, 2016 - Hanmer Springs

What a difference a nights sleep makes. We were in bed at 5.45 last night...Yes - that is correct. It was already pitch black here, so off to sleep we went... No-one stirred until 7.45 this morning. We woke to a view of snow capped mountains...We found out later in the day there was predictions of possible snow in town overnight, but that didn’t eventuate, so we will have to settle for the view instead. It was very foggy & cold this morning, but no rain. We headed into town for our Quad Biking Adventure. Met our quide Gary at the shop &...

Jun 30, 2016 - Welcome to NewZealand

Well, after a very long day, we have finally started our holiday in New Zealand. We flew out of Perth at 5.00 last night & must have been on the Ferarri of airplanes, as the flight only took 2hr 45min...Had very strong tail winds to say the least... This made our stopover in Melbourne a bit more relaxed, as we had a very tight schedule to make our connecting flight to Christchurch. Ended up having over 2hours, so that was nice. Got a bite to eat before boarding our Jetstar flight to Christchurch. The flight was only 3 hours & wasn't too bad...

Dec 24, 2015 - Hanmer Springs Christmas Eve

It is Christmas Eve and we are in Hanmer Springs, NZ - a resort town famous for thermal springs pools and beautiful walking forests. We arrived yesterday afternoon and will leave on the 26th in the morning - Boxing Day in New Zealand. This spendy little town has close to 15 hotels, a dozen spendy eateries, 1 grocery store, three small churches and one bank. It is 90 minutes from Christchurch and 3 hours from Greymouth so it is in the middle-ish part of the island. The books say there are 1,000 residents of Hanmer Springs. Today Terry and I...

May 11, 2015 - Day 19 Hanmer Springs

Another pleasant Canterbury day and easy drive up to Hanmer Springs thru the pretty Waipara Valley and on up thru lots of irrigated prosperous looking farming country. Hanmer obviously a busy little place with its multiple accommodation and eating places; its main attraction is the extensive pools complex, most enjoyable, with attached treatment spa. Lots of outdoor activities around and I bet its really pretty in the snow. One couple I met in the pools said its a funny experience being up to your neck in hot water with your hair full of...

Day 16 Distance: Total: 3106 Campground: Top 10 Hanmer Springs During the night the wind was blowing hard, the rain was falling in torrents, and the surf was crashing just beyond the dunes on the edge of the RV park. We checked the forecast before leaving, and it looked promising for later in the day. Again, we drove under low clouds with periods of rain. All of the rivers that we crossed were flowing strong currents with huge standing waves in many places. Our drive was through the hills and then the plains before crossing Lewis Pass...

Apr 14, 2014 - Hanmer Springs, South Island, NZ

A bit of a beeline cross island today, but it did get us out of the showers on the West Coast. Over the mountains and up the river valley, the route gave us some very interesting road to travel - and quite scenic. Our destination was Hanmer Springs, site of some hot spring outdoor tubs and a massage for Mary. We also found they have a pretty good fudge shop - lots of unique New Zealand flavors. And we enjoyed both the food and the beverages at Monteith's Brewery.

Mar 14, 2014 - DAY 19: Punakaiki to Hanmer Springs

A magical stroll along the beach in the early-morning sunlight before breakfast, then continued our journey north up the coast. Turned inland just before Westport and enjoyed some beautiful scenery which, though rather less dramatic than experienced in the south earlier in our travels, was greatly enhanced by the sun and deep blue sky. We always knew we wouldn't have time to adequately explore the north-western corner of the island (particularly the Abel Tasman Natioal Park), so we are saving this bit for next time! So, turning south again...

Feb 12, 2014 - Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs Lake Pearson was covered in a light mist until the sun appeared over the mountain and burned it off! heralding a bright and sunny day. A lovely drive back down highway 73, very little traffic and we were able to stop at places that yesterday (Waitangi Day) were packed with day trippers. The first was Cave Stream, I guess because the stream came out of a cave. The cave was open to the public but only if properly equipped as there is a four foot deep pool just inside the entrance and the only way on is through the pool....

off we go!

Nov 13, 2012 - soakin' in the moonlight

We said goodbye to the west coast as we headed across Arthurs Pass over the mountains towards the east. We wound along a river, hugging the mountainside similar to the Fraser Canyon north of Hope. There were several slide areas so we imagine this road might be a little dicey in the winter. Over the pass the river spread across a huge flat plateau with mountains on each side of it, so very picturesque if a bit desolate. This is the first part of New Zealand that has not been green and it resembles the Kamloops area. We stopped for lunch at...

Mar 24, 2012 - Last Full Day

Our last full day in beautiful New Zealand.... It was a crisp high country morning. We walked into town with our towels & bathing suits to experience the thermal pools & have lunch. Started in the rock pools at 33 • C  finding a nice spot in the shade. Fun to people watch here!  There were old & young, fat & skinny, all enjoying multi-cultural bathing! Then, we transferred to the Aqua Therapy pools at 36-40• C with power jets! After our fingers & toes were pruning from waterlog, we took a break & found some lounge chairs in a grassy...

Mar 23, 2012 - Hanmer Springs

Gorgeous, bright sunshine to wake up to! After a 6 minute shower, we were off to have a chocolate croissant in town at the Pot Belly Bakery. ( 6 minutes is all they allow at this campground- you push a button & the hot water lasts 6 minutes!) ☺ The drive to Hanmer Springs was unreal. Every hairpin turn had views unimaginable from all directions. Sheep dotted the hillsides like salt & cows dotted the pastures like pepper!   The winding river was constantly at our side, even high up in the passes, we could hear it flowing out of the...
