Today we caught the local bus just outside our hostel to Wellington's only train station. We took took the train to Featherstone an area of flatland and good temperatures. This was the neighbouring town to Martinborough which was where our tour around its vinyards would take place. Martinborough in the region of Waiarapa is well known as a place for boutique and specialist wineries to come into fruition. There are about 50 odd wineries in around this small attractive and peaceful township, and we spent a good amount of time in three of them...

Feb 14, 2005 - Straw Bale and Seals

I started WWOOFing about 40 km east of Featherston at an international women's community... Ended up being 8 women here, a diverse crowd. Helped to build a straw bale house for one of the women to move in to... I never knew plastering could be so much fun! We used a mud-like (I luv mud!) lime mixture... slapped it on the outside (this was the last of several layers over many bales of straw) and spread it around... to create an adobe-like appearance. The framing was made of wood poles, and the walls were bales of straw stacked on top of one...
