Feb 24, 2013 - Glacier Hike and a Helicopter Ride - Franz Josep!

I was really excited to go to Franz Josep as another bucket list tick is here, hiking a glacier. As we made our way we passed past several kettle lakes, these are created as glaciers retreat and leave behind huge chunks of ice and melt forming a lake. Franz Josep is a world heritage site and is a stunning town. Franz Josep Glacier is a 12km long glacier, it is unique as it descends from the southern alps to less than 300m above sea level amids the temperate rainforest, one of the only three glaciers in the world to do so. The glacier stops...

Feb 22, 2013 - Poo Pub - Lake Mahinapua

We didn’t arrive to Lake Mahinapua till around 4pm, to be honest the only point of being here was to have a random fancy dress party. We stayed at a pub/hostel called poo pub that is run by a New Zealand legend – the oldest publican at age 89. The hostel was by far the worst one I have stayed in for a while but shared a room with the 5 girls which made it better. Amy and I had decided to go as greek goddesses and the other 4 went as geeks. Before getting ready we had a steak BBQ with jacket potato and coleslaw it was so yummy and...

Feb 17, 2013 - Franz Josef

On the way to Franz Josef we stopped at the Bushman centre, words would not be suffcient to describe this 'museum'. In summary, it was focused on Deer hunting and other similar activities with videos to show the progression of Deer farming. Just a very strange place, with an even weirder man running it. Once in Franz we walked around the small town and then had an early night so we were ready for our Glacier trip in the morning. Consequently due to the weather and low clouds it was pushed back to a later time, and we were lucky enough to...

Feb 10, 2013 - Franz Josef

Today we drove south along the coast from Hokitika to Franz Josef. Here we went to see the Franz Josef glacier. Both the town the glacier were named after Emperor Josef the First, who was the Emperor of Austria, King of Hungry, Bohemia and Croatia from 1848 (at age 18) until his death in 1916. They were named by an Austrian explorer in 1865 by the name of Julius von Haast. The heir to the throne after Franz Josef was Franz Ferdinand. Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914 which triggered events that started the First World War. The glacier is...

Jan 31, 2013 - Franz Josef Glacier

The Franz Josef is a 12 km long glacier located in Westland Tai Poutini National Park on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. The glacier even though still pretty impressive loses up to 10m in length per month or 500m total over the last 4 years. We took an Eco Tour with a guide, who was able to take us as close to the glacier as possible (without taking a Heli Tour), so we were able to "touch" it.

Nov 17, 2012 - Day 14 Punakaiki to Franz Josef - Look for South Island Endemics; See Franz Josef Glacier

Before we left Punakaiki, we visited the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks and Blowholes National Park. The Pancake Rocks are a beautiful collection of unusual rock formations. As we left Punakaiki, the van began making a loud noise from the back. We spent the morning trying to find a place that was open to find out what was wrong with the van. Brent was able to use the New Zealand equivalent to our AAA to find out it was the fan for the air conditioner. We made it to Franz Josef in time to meet our guide who would take us out to look for the...

Jun 29, 2012 - Franz Joseph Glacier

I write this journal entry on the morning of day 11, in retrospect of yesterdays events. I was too tired last night. I am sitting at the table of our ‘Alpine retreat’, a mug of hot coffee beside me. The curtain’s slightly drawn, kids and Johnny still snoozing. Its 8am, dawn just breaking. The skies are a clear, light blue with an auburn hue peaking over the alps beside me. There is a light frost over the cars and the plants, snow on the mountain ranges. There is condensation around the edges of the windows, the light hum of the heater is...

May 31, 2012 - Another near death experience to add to the list and proof I bruise easily!!!

You would think that my husband booking all these crazy trips means that he just married me for the life insurance........today he took me on a 2 hour hike on an ice glacier. To be fair neither of us really knew what was involved and probably would have thought twice if we'd known. As the glacier has receded so much the only way you can get there is by helicopter. The pilot showed us around the glacier from the air and then touched down for us to explore. It looks a million times different when you're actually on the ice compared to from...

Our honeymoon

May 30, 2012 - Examples of Mr Bell being socialable

Today we drove from Wanaka, leaving our lovely hosted Lyn and Murray behind. I must say I don't think it's only me that will change this honeymoon as Graham actually enjoyed socialising with these hosts over pre-dinner drinks and breakfast. He even showed them the wedding pictures!!! As there is only one road north of Wanaka it didn't matter that we didn't have a satnav as even I would struggle to get lost, hard to believe i know! On the map it showed various stop offs and walks so we thought rather than driving straight through  we'd stop...

Feb 28, 2012 - Franz Josef

Den New Zealandske vestkyst er kendt for at modtage store mængder regn, og når regn falder over en hvis grænse,...
