Jul 4, 2016 - Bloody Weather - Franz Joseph

Woke to a beautifully fine morning. Blue skies everywhere, so today is our day to do the Heli Hike...That is until we saw the mountain...The blue sky was everywhere, except over the mountain, where we need it to be. The morning tour was cancelled, but everyone was hanging onto hope that the clouds would lift in time for the afternoon tour to go ahead. Another quietish morning before heading out to get a 'Jimmy's' pie for lunch (famous in New Zealand apparently) & see how we are looking for our afternoon tour. Still unsure, as it is very...

Jul 3, 2016 - Still in Franz Joseph

What an awful night last night. It started raining about 6.00 & did not stop until after 9.00 this morning. When I say it did not stop raining I mean it did not stop at all...Not like at home where it might rain for an hour then stop for a bit before starting up again. This was ALL though the night. Very difficult to sleep, as the sound is amplified on the campervan... This was not good news as were were again booked to do the Heli Hike today. Rang them & yes it has been cancelled again. Not to worry, as yesterday we found out through the...

Jul 2, 2016 - Franz Joseph

Loving the amount of sleep we are able to get in New Zealand. It is dark very early, so the boys are not complaining about going to bed reasonably early. Last night it was 7.45. The mornings are also very dark. It is just starting to get light in the van at 8.30, so we are all enjoying a sleep in aswell... This morning we woke to drizzling rain...Not a good sign as we are due to go on the Heli Hike today. Went down & spoke to them & the Heli Hike has been cancelled (as we expected...) so we rescheduled for tomorrow...Fingers Crossed the...

Jul 1, 2016 - Hanmer Springs to Franz Joseph Glacier

Woke to a very cold morning. The grass was white from frost, but the sky was nice & clear, hence the cold temperature. Got on the road about 9.30 to make our way to Franz Joseph Glacier. Today is our biggest driving day with us travelling approx 390km. This not like driving at home, were this would take about 4 hours... We stopped briefly at Hokitika. Fay this is where we got the penguins for you last time. They have an amazing glass figurine/bowl/ormanents etc shop here. We had to make a purchase to support the local community, so I...

Dec 10, 2015 - Over the NZ Alps to Greymouth, Pancake Rocks, Glaciers

We caught the TranzAlpine train in the morning and took the 4 hour ride up and over the NZ Southern Alps. As the day was cloudy and rainy, some of the views were obscured-but I still got some pictures. What was amazing to me where all the Lupin along the tracks - the purple and blue against the mountains was beautiful. Once in Greymouth, we picked up our next rental car and drove up the coast to see the Pancake Rocks. Still quite rainy, but we ventured out onto the boardwalk and were rewarded with spectacular views of these pancake looking...

May 22, 2014 - Franz Josef

Day 14 Distance: 71 Total: 2896 Campground: Top 10 Fox Glacier We had somewhat of a late start this morning, but not much driving planned for today. Our first stop was Lake Matheson for a scenic walk through the forest to an alpine lake. Following our walk, there was a stop at Lake Matheson Café for our morning coffee, and with mostly cloudy skies, we hit the road to Franz Josef. At Franz Josef, we took the access road to the car park at the glacier access point. The walk to the glacier was about 1.8 miles and much easier than the walk to...

Apr 12, 2014 - Franz Josef Glacier, South Island, NZ

A longer drive today, much of it through the mountains, so lots of twists and turns. We made several stops for short walks to some very pretty, and in some cases, tall waterfalls. It was a nice way to break up the trip. Our prime destination was glaciers. We first came to Fox Glacier. We've seen the shrinking glaciers in Montana, Canada, and Alaska, but it's still amazing to pass the signs with " The glacier was here in 19xx" and yet no sign of the glacier. We passed the 1935 sign and still drove almost two kilometers to the parking lot and...

Mar 14, 2014 - Glaciers

Last night I did laundry and wrote my journal, and ended up going to bed shortly before midnight. Woke up around 8 am, and when I looked out I was amazed that it was a clear morning. The sun wasn’t over the mountains yet, and it had rained overnight, but the view of the mountains was great! The picture shows the view – and what “Holiday Parks” look like in general. We fixed breakfast in the kitchen, then drove out the road to a viewpoint of the mountains and Fox Glacier, where you could see most of the glacier. From some of these...

Feb 17, 2014 - West coast Glaciers and Haast village

Fri 14th Feb……………..Heading to Fox Glacier……… In the morning I am not disappointed as the water is like a millpond and no wind so Steve has decided to come with me. The flight is only 20mins but it “awesome “ as they would say here. The views are stunning and it just makes you appreciate a little bit what it would have looked like when Capt James Cook first landed here all those years ago. It’s so unspoilt and you can see the north island which is only 18 miles away at its nearest point. You also get to see these wonderful homes, way out in...

Dec 4, 2013 - A Heli of a Hike!!!

This morning was our HeliHike on the Franz Josef Glacier. The guides turned us out in all the latest in glacier fashion; waterproof jacket, waterproof pants, boots and crampons for traction on the ice. After the issuing of equipment and some safety instructions (they really did not want any help in the flying part) we were crammed tightly in a helicopter and off we went for a very scenic delivery to a point on the glacier. I (Dave) thought that the hike part would probably not amount to much, but we tramped up and down, and up and down some...

Dec 3, 2013 - Movin' on down south to Franz Josef

We left the Breakers B&B and its great view a bit after nine and headed south on the West Coast Road. Almost immediately we started getting glimpses of the really high peaks of New Zealand's "Southern Alps". We stopped and shopped just a bit in Hokitika where we watched a glass blowing factory/shop and bought Marilyn a jade pendant. A quick stop at a beautiful lake and a short walk in the bush. When nearing Franz Josef, we turned off and went to tiny Okarito, a little village right on the coast. There we rented a tandem kayak and went...
