Mar 20, 2017 - The Wild West

The Wild West Up early in Queenstown and heading north to our coffee stop at Wanaka. I've been hearing about this lake and it's associated ski areas for years so it's great to finally get there. There are 3 resorts, Treble Cone, Cardrona and Snow Park. A bit like Mt Beauty where you have to drive from your accommodation up to the mountain. No snow around yet. The lake looked lovely - NZ is awash with beautiful lakes! The coffee was good too and we found a delightful little souvenir. Our destination was Franz Josef roughly 5 hours away....

Nov 28, 2015 - Franz Josef Glacier

The drive from Queenstown to Franz Josef Glacier was at first thru rolling countryside, at times Vermont-like, at others Switzerland. Then the Southern Alps rise up and the winding climbing road goes up & over to the Tasman Sea. The drive is mostly level now but the mountains loom always to the right; mostly cloud covered. The road system is unique in the number of one-way bridges you cross on this National Highway ! There are so many streams, creeks, and rivers gushing from the nearby mountains, and with a relatively minimum amount of...

Dec 16, 2013 - Lake Mahinapua - Franz Josef

Feb 25, 2013 - Franz Josef

Our accommodation at the Bella Vista Motel turned out to be OK. It's a motel, not as nice as the hotels and B&Bs we've got used to but definitely better than Motel 6! The lady at the reception desk was incredibly helpful, in suggesting what to do while we were there. Spent the morning just wandering around the town. It's pretty small, maybe about the size of Aptos, and I don't think it would exist if it wasn't for the tourist business created by the presence of the glacier (actually several of them). By far the highlight of the day though...

Feb 24, 2013 - Nelson to Franz Josef

Another lengthy drive today, around 5 hours or so plus stops. But some great stops along the way. Here's the map of our drive.

Jul 24, 2010 - Glacier Landing In Franz Josef

On the way to Franz Josef we stopped at The Bushman's Centre. It was basically a place where you can go around the museum and watch a film about how NZ used to be over run with deer and people used to get jobs jumping out of helicopters on top of them up mountains to catch them, cause if they did they were worth a few thousand dollars each to put them into farming. Then there were random things on the walls read and photos and antlers etc stuck on the walls, possums in big cages, eels in a small indoor river, goats, a pig and a wallaby out...

Mar 20, 2010 - Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers - Mar 19-20

March 19, 2010 Last night wasn’t a particularly late one so we decided to get up fairly early this morning and head straight on to our next stop. I had done a lot of driving of late so I was hoping to get to our hostel at the Franz Josef township around lunchtime and spend the afternoon doing something a little more relaxing. The drive was around two hours and was actually nice and easy although some of the more windy sections of the road made Elizabeth feel a little queasy again. We had one brief stop at a gorgeous lake called Lake Ianthe...

Oct 15, 2009 - Franz Josef

Aug 30, 2008 - Wanaka to Franz Josef

Not much of interest today - good journey from Wanaka to Franz Josef - I'd forgotten just how stunning the scenery is! Stopped at Thunder Creek Falls and at the salmon farm (there was actually some salmon food available today!). On arrival at Franz Josef we (met a lovely Irish lady on the bus) got checked in at the hostel and debated taking the shuttle up to the glacier but decided we would see what tomorrow holds first and boy were we glad we made that decision as the heavens opened and it poured and poured with rain for several hours......

Aug 19, 2008 - Zoals voorspeld: Franz Josef

Jun 12, 2008 - Wellington and South Island so far.

Hi all. Well since the last entry we've been to the Irl vs All Blacks game in Wellington. Although it was probably the wetest coldest experience ever it was lots of fun! We were in an Irish bar first listening to lots of irish tunes and having some craic with Jade McKean and Susan Beggs who we met up with there. Then we set off for the match and just as we arrived at the stadium it started bucketing down the coldest rain ever!! After the game we dried off in the hostel and tehn went off for an Indian and after that ended up drinking in the...

Apr 18, 2008 - Franz Jospeph

With the tiniest bit of a lie- in we left Mahinapua for Franz Joseph, the home of NZ's glaciers. On the way we stopped off at a bushman centre where we watched a video about deer hunting/culling in NZ, and then a pig, some possums and most importantly a full English breakfast. We voted for the best dressed at the part - the portaloo and the puppet won prizes. We arrived in Franz about lunch time and went to see the beginning of the glacier and paid for the glacier walk we were doing the next day. Rushing back to the hostel to get checked in...
