Feb 26, 2008 - Westport to Fox Glacier

Westport to Fox Glacier, Tuesday, February 26 We were checked out of our room around 9 o'clock and on our way south out of Westport. Initially we drove through flat valley land, paddocks bright green and a small herd of dairy cows. Dairy is one of the main agricultural projects now in NZ. We have seen more dairy cows than beef cattle and they have even been more visible from the highway than sheep. During the drive today we saw two double-tank milk hauling trucks. For all the dairy cattle we have seen very few trucks. I saw on TV last week...

Dec 24, 2007 - Fox Glacier, NZ

We woke up to pouring rain today - we had a helicopter ride planned to go onto Fox Glacier. When we got to the area where we needed to be for the heli-hike - they told us it had been cancelled due to the rain. So what better thing to do then take a 4 hour guided walk up the glacier thru the rainforest that surrounds the glacier (hell it was raining anyway!) - We got dressed in gortex suits and hiking boots. It was raining real hard at the base camp so we knew it was going to be a wet day. We met our guide (Simon) and another couple from...

Nov 21, 2007 - Okarito to Franz Josef and Fox Glacier South Island 6 to 10 November 2007

Jeff Before leaving Okarito we set off to walk to the Lagoon but missed our path. When we arrived at the south end of the beach it was clear to us that the tide would not allow a beach walk to the Lagoon. Sylvia had a good laugh when a big wave swamped my feet and I was slightly soggy as we retraced our steps and found the correct route, this time choosing to branch off to the Trig which was a shorter walk. This could have been a mistake as it transpired the Trig was at the top of a very steep hill which involved many steps. These were made...

Nov 17, 2007 - Fox Glacier: Ice climbing rules!

Climbing Fox Glacier was, without question, one of the coolest things I've ever done. NZ is home to two glaciers, which can be climbed year round. It is one of the few places in the world where one can ice climb in a tee shirt, with temperatures climbing into the 70's in the Spring and Summer. Franz Joseph is the larger of the two, but Fox is steeper and less crowded. The village which sits near the base of Fox consists of a gas station, a few accommodation and one restaurant. Pretty basic. I arise early and head to the guide shack where I...

Nov 5, 2007 - Day 30-Fox Glacier on Guy Fawkes (who is he?)Day

Day 30 Got up and headed for a pre-breakfast kayak trip with the lodge manager, John. Pat stayed back at the lodge and got some laundry done. Lake Moeraki was really beautiful this morning. The sun was shining brightly with just a few clouds at the mountaintop and the there was light fog at the east end of the lake. We paddled for about an hour so we could get back for breakfast by 8:30. Pat and I checked out of this great place and packed up the Hyundai and pointed it toward Fox Glacier. Morning tea was at a café' in Fox Glacier where we...

Aug 23, 2007 - The flying fox heli hike day...awesome...as good as could be

We awoke before dawn to check the skies ....and you guess... we were lucky again. Not a cloud to be seen! There was a little light seeping over the mountain tops from the rising sun and you could see the snow on the tops. The night before it had been all covered in cloud so it was the first time we had seen the mountain tops... but there was no sign of a glacier! We went to the heli pad and 6 of us squashed into a little helicopter(I was in the front as a am only little!)It was a spectacular flight up to the middle part of the glacier.The...

Jul 11, 2007 - Fox Glacier

After leaving Haast we continued up the coast to Fox Galcier. This is a tiny village with one shop, one pub, a couple of restaurants and motels and the Fox Glacier centre. We checked into one of the motels and then headed off to Lake Matheson. We walked around the shore ato the postcard view which you see on all the stands in Auckland. The view is of the lake with the perfect reflection of Mt Cook in it. A really beautiful place. Our motel was really nice and warm and we slept well ready for our glacier walk the next day. We were up early...

Sep 27, 2005 - Back to school

Kia ora, I hope that everyone is ok. I'm fine and heading up the west coast where I am in Fox village at the moment. Firstly, an applied geography lesson. As the Southern Alps are so close to the sea here, the warm moist winds arrive straight from the Tasman Sea all laden with moisture. So they hit land but have nowhere to go but to rise up and over the Alps, and as they ascend the mountains, the air cools and so the water condenses into clouds before eventually falling back to earth as rain. The net result is that the west coast generally...
