Sep 23, 2017 - Christchurch

September 23, 2017 Bob ordered some Tibetan food from Himalayas that was delivered! Bob is still not feeling well so the both of us were in bed by 9:00! I was up early but Bob got 11 hours of sleep. Did laundry and packed up most of the rig for trade in. Beautiful day! Left about 10:00 for our tramp around the city. We stopped at the Casino café for a long black and flat white. Tried to find the Pallet Pavilion but it was not in existence any longer. In its place were several cathedral style arches. From there we made inquiries about...

Sep 22, 2017 - Akaroa to Christchurch

September 22, 2017 Cribbage score is once again tied at 6-6. Still raining this morning with intermittent sun. Drove into town to change some money and found a beautiful rainbow awaiting us! We did not want the thrilling 2 lane road, dancing on the side of the mountain in clouds trip again. Part of the trouble with ignoring the GPS is that there are few road signs or directions to help make decisions. We managed to stay on SH 75 back towards Christchurch and was a much more pleasureable ride and more scenic without the tension. Decided to...

Sep 20, 2017 - Hanmer Springs to Christchurch

September 20, 2017 Awoke to a beautiful, sunny morning where we could see the snow- capped Hanmer Range. We could not get the TV to pull out from the storage cabinet so Bob again called Britz! (They must be so sick of hearing from us.) They referred us to a garage nearby that would be open tomorrow morning. BTW, Britz agreed to switch us to a MB rig on Sat 9/24. That will still give us 3 weeks with a better driving car No DVD watching but a few cribbage games. Debby is now winning 5 to 3. Stopped by the garage. The fellow really yanked on...

Sep 18, 2017 - Shaky city

One of the main topics when talking to anyone about visiting Christchurch, is the devastation wrought by the earthquakes in 2010/11. So, when we were finalising our check in at the apartment office this morning, it didn't take long to discover that the manager had been here for both. It was fascinating - and just a little scary - to hear first hand from someone who had lived through it and of the impacts on the city and its population. We wandered off into the rain and our first stop was at the information office to gather info on road...

RandA's Kiwi Kapers

Sep 17, 2017 - Arrived in Christchurch, eventually!

The flight to Christchurch was completely unremarkable; which is to say it was very smooth and uneventful - just the way a flight should be! The same cannot be said about our hire car pick up. The lady from the rental company picked us up and took us out to the office, which was all fine, and we begrudgingly paid the additional insurance fees. We then asked about the need for snow chains, as we were going into areas where they may be required. It seemed as though snow was forecast for Arthur's Pass, where we will be driving in a couple of...

Jul 26, 2017 - Christchurch

Following our long journey to Christchurch we were happy to be back in a city again. Christchurch was pretty much flattened in an earthquake only 6 years ago and you can still see the scars today. For example the Cathedral is still being rebuilt as is much of the city. They estimate it could take up to 30 years to fully rebuild the city again. The weather was beautiful so we decided to make the most of it. We visited the Canterbury museum which was excellent and included a very interesting exhibition of Japanese tattooing and also a typical...

May 8, 2017 - Penang

We arrived in Penang on Sunday night and have had two full days enjoying the sights, the food, our hosts company and the pool. After a day walking around in 30+ degrees its wonderful to spend the afternoon lounging by and swimming in one of the many pools here. Sunday we wandered around Georgetown. David's shutter finger must have RSI by now, there are so many wonderful buildings and sights to photograph. The afternoon was spent by the pool and then we went to a restaurant on the beach for tea. Yummy food and great setting. Thunderclouds...

Apr 2, 2017 - Christchurch

The city of Christchurch is still rebuilding after the 2011 earthquake. In fact, many buildings that suffered irrepairable damage are still standing and have been vandalized so the downtown area has empty lots, half built structures and those that look like scenes from a horror movie! We went on a walking tour this morning, guided by a young local man who did an excellent job of informing us of the history of the city as well as the impact of the earthquakes.

Mar 26, 2017 - Balmoral Recreation Reserve, New Zealand

Sunday, March 26, 2017 Balmoral Recreation Reserve, New Zealand (About an hour north of Christchurch) TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” - Anna Quindlen We woke to another cloudy, drizzly day here in Nelson with the alarm at 7. Still can’t complain, the weather at the front of our trip was so epic that it was bound to catch up with us and today we are driving anyway, so no big deal. I got a shower this morning and noted that I believe this has been my favorite ablutions block of the...

Mar 20, 2017 - Realigning

Now the fun begins … not. Realigning one’s body clock is always a challenge. It certainly isn't aided by the fact that we took off from Vancouver on the 17th of March and landed in Auckland on the 19th!! The first ‘Downunder sleep’ usually resembles a coma, and this time was no different. Cory and Matthew did their morning ritual and went around to the corner shop to get cookies for breakfast. It’s a hard life on vacation! Matthew was just busting to light a fire in Mum and Dad’s log burner. It seemed somewhat nonsense to do so as the day...

Mar 6, 2017 - Dunedin to Christchurch and Away......

We left Dunedin after a quick McMuffin as we wanted to spend some extra time in Christchurch before our early flight to Melbourne, Australia the next morning. Unfortunately our extra time was eaten up when yours truly forgot an IPhone in the motel room. What's a few hundred extra kilometres??? The drive was pleasant with rolling hills, lots of dairy and beef herds intermixed with small older communities. We can see how Scots would have seen this down under land as their own with the bonus of a vastly improved climate. We had heard a lot...

Mar 6, 2017 - Christchurch, New Zealand

Monday, March 6, 2017 Christchurch, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller Woke up to a mostly sunny day today, alarm at 7:15. Didn’t have a lot to do to but finish packing up. Made a quick cup of tea as we got ready and then we were walking out the door at 8:40. Dragged our suitcases back into town to the bus stop for our Intercity bus to Christchurch; man, 100 lbs of luggage is a lot to roll down the street! LOL. Got to the bus stop and there were several...
