Jul 26, 2017 - Christchurch

Following our long journey to Christchurch we were happy to be back in a city again. Christchurch was pretty much flattened in an earthquake only 6 years ago and you can still see the scars today. For example the Cathedral is still being rebuilt as is much of the city. They estimate it could take up to 30 years to fully rebuild the city again. The weather was beautiful so we decided to make the most of it. We visited the Canterbury museum which was excellent and included a very interesting exhibition of Japanese tattooing and also a typical...

May 8, 2017 - Penang

We arrived in Penang on Sunday night and have had two full days enjoying the sights, the food, our hosts company and the pool. After a day walking around in 30+ degrees its wonderful to spend the afternoon lounging by and swimming in one of the many pools here. Sunday we wandered around Georgetown. David's shutter finger must have RSI by now, there are so many wonderful buildings and sights to photograph. The afternoon was spent by the pool and then we went to a restaurant on the beach for tea. Yummy food and great setting. Thunderclouds...

Apr 2, 2017 - Christchurch

The city of Christchurch is still rebuilding after the 2011 earthquake. In fact, many buildings that suffered irrepairable damage are still standing and have been vandalized so the downtown area has empty lots, half built structures and those that look like scenes from a horror movie! We went on a walking tour this morning, guided by a young local man who did an excellent job of informing us of the history of the city as well as the impact of the earthquakes.

Mar 26, 2017 - Balmoral Recreation Reserve, New Zealand

Sunday, March 26, 2017 Balmoral Recreation Reserve, New Zealand (About an hour north of Christchurch) TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “The life you have led doesn’t need to be the only life you have.” - Anna Quindlen We woke to another cloudy, drizzly day here in Nelson with the alarm at 7. Still can’t complain, the weather at the front of our trip was so epic that it was bound to catch up with us and today we are driving anyway, so no big deal. I got a shower this morning and noted that I believe this has been my favorite ablutions block of the...

Mar 20, 2017 - Realigning

Now the fun begins … not. Realigning one’s body clock is always a challenge. It certainly isn't aided by the fact that we took off from Vancouver on the 17th of March and landed in Auckland on the 19th!! The first ‘Downunder sleep’ usually resembles a coma, and this time was no different. Cory and Matthew did their morning ritual and went around to the corner shop to get cookies for breakfast. It’s a hard life on vacation! Matthew was just busting to light a fire in Mum and Dad’s log burner. It seemed somewhat nonsense to do so as the day...

Mar 6, 2017 - Christchurch, New Zealand

Monday, March 6, 2017 Christchurch, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” - Henry Miller Woke up to a mostly sunny day today, alarm at 7:15. Didn’t have a lot to do to but finish packing up. Made a quick cup of tea as we got ready and then we were walking out the door at 8:40. Dragged our suitcases back into town to the bus stop for our Intercity bus to Christchurch; man, 100 lbs of luggage is a lot to roll down the street! LOL. Got to the bus stop and there were several...

Mar 6, 2017 - Dunedin to Christchurch and Away......

We left Dunedin after a quick McMuffin as we wanted to spend some extra time in Christchurch before our early flight to Melbourne, Australia the next morning. Unfortunately our extra time was eaten up when yours truly forgot an IPhone in the motel room. What's a few hundred extra kilometres??? The drive was pleasant with rolling hills, lots of dairy and beef herds intermixed with small older communities. We can see how Scots would have seen this down under land as their own with the bonus of a vastly improved climate. We had heard a lot...

Feb 26, 2017 - Christchurch, New Zealand

Sunday, February 26, 2017 Christchurch, New Zealand Travel Quote of the Day: “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.” - Anonymous Slept pretty well last night, only waking a few times. The first time was about 90 minutes in when the leg cramps struck again but this time I had the mustard at the ready and it helped and I was back asleep fast. Figured the jet lag might wake us up early but we must have been really tired as we slept in until 8am. Woke to a grey day, but hey, that’s ok….I’m in New Zealand!! We did some...

Feb 25, 2017 - Christchurch, New Zealand

Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017 Christchurch, NZ TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “There is no moment of delight in any pilgrimage like the beginning of it.” - Charles Dudley Warner Okay, where was I? Oh yeah, boarding an airplane in LAX bound for New Zealand! We boarded around 10:30pm LA time so that made it 1:30am OUR time so, yeah, we were tired. Flight took off a bit late by 20 minutes or so. We were in row 22 and had booked the aisle and window seats, hoping no one would take the seat between us but no such luck. It turned out to be a nice young man...

Jul 18, 2016 - International Antarctica Centre

Today we went to International Antarctica Centre. This is an attraction that is based around Antarctica, the environment there, the research that is being done. Although this is a tourist attraction right next door is the official offices (& main gateway) for lots of the countries that have research stations on Antarctica. We actually saw a NASA plane at the airport today. At the moment they have Husky Dogs coming to the centre most days, so we were able to see & pat 8 Huskies. We watched 2 4D movies, one about a ship journey to...

Jul 16, 2016 - Christchurch City Centre

Today we decided to head into Christchurch City Centre. This was mainly to see how the 2011 Earthquake had effected the city & the Cathederal in particular. There was a bus stop just outside the holiday park, so thought we would catch the bus in, as we were not sure what the parking in the city would be like. Mike & I were surprised at just how much the city centre had changed since we were last here. It feels deserted & lifeless. After seeing the Cathederal, which we remember from last time we were here, & a having a bit of a wander around...

Jul 15, 2016 - Lake Tekapo to Christchurch

Not much to report on today. Were on the road towards Christchurch about 9.30 this morning. The trip was pretty uneventful, except for a local who wanted to be a pain in the A@# & meet us head on, on a 1 way bridge, where we had right of way. Everyone else had pulled over to let us go, but he was towing a trailer & obviuosly wanted to keep going...Mike took the high road & reversed up to let him pass...It was tempting to give him the Aussie Bird Salute as he passed, but we didn't... Got to Amber Kiwi Holiday Park about 2.00. This is a...
