Mar 27, 2010 - Northland

Sep 29, 2009 - South, Cuz We Can't Go Any Where Else

We started out today with a sunshine walk along the beautiful north shore beach. It was so nice that we took our time packing up before we headed south. South because it was the only direction the roads went. It looked like it would be a beautiful day to explore 90 Mile Beach, or so we had hoped. As we headed south, hit a traffic jam before the skies opened up again and dowsed us with rain. 90 Mile Beach is where the desert scenes from the movie Lawrence of Arabia was filmed. That should give you an idea of what the sand dunes are like....

Sep 28, 2009 - Top Of The World

Well the rains stopped long enough for us to make coffee, get breakfast and transform the van from sleeping mode to transportation mode. Off we go still heading north. We drove though the bay of islands…stunningly beautiful… but decided since we were in the middle of a torrential down pour that kayaking would have to wait for a different day and location. The sun came out to greet us as we approached our final turn north to head for Cape Reinga. This is also the beginning of 90 mile beach. I must add a little side note here with regard to...

Apr 20, 2009 - Cape Reinga

Ce matin, direction Bay of Islands.

Feb 18, 2009 - Cape Reinga & Bay of Spirits

The main reason to stay in Paihia is to get a boat out and see all of the beautiful islands (around the Bay of Islands). However as it was about $100 each and seeing as we had already been out around the WhitSunday's in Australia we figured we'd give it a miss and save some cash!!! So from here we continued our drive up the North Island, right up to the top in fact to a place called Cape Reinga. It was meant to have a really cool "edge of the world" kind of view and is where the Tasman Sea and Pacific Oceans collide! They didn't tell us...

The A&E Adventure

Jan 6, 2009 - Zum Nordcap Neuseelands

Sep 5, 2008 - Ota Point to Spirits Bay North Island 11th August 2008

Sylvia’s Comments We contacted the windscreen company and arranged that we take the van back to them at the beginning of next week. This week we are going off on a camping trip, with Rosemary, to Spirits Bay and Maitai Bay. We said good-bye to Rosemary, who was heading off for her tennis match and drove north on SH 10 to Mangonui, a small township situated on Doubtless Bay. We parked our van and had a walk around this lovely little town. It was this bay that was once a bustling whaling and trading port and from where we were parked we could...

Apr 8, 2008 - The Cape & Ninety Mile Beach.

Both up early - looks like another hot sunny day. Down by the front before 9 to wait for the coach. When it arrived was a big 60 seater, so comfortable and plenty of room. Travelled through - Coopers beach, Cable Bay, Taipa, Awanui then stopped at Ancient Kauri Kingdom for loo stop and to let those who hadn't brought lunch to get some. This is where they sell Kauri wood dug up from peat bogs, and has been carbon dated as 45,000 years old. They let this dry out, and then make into bowls, furniture etc to sell. However, the prices are large...

Mar 18, 2008 - Cape Reinga

Well after about four months I've finally left Russell. I even got round to having a look around the Waitangi treaty house, which I have been meaning to do since I got here! With a healthy looking bank balance (at the moment at least) it is time for me to explore the North Island. It was quite sad saying goodbye to all the friends I've made, but my feet are itching (mainly thanks to sandflies) and it feels great to be back travelling again. So after a few last drinks with my work mates I found myself in an eight bed dorm in Paihia. After...

Grand Day Out

Dec 15, 2007 - Cape Reinga

We left Aphipara around mid-morning to begin the long drive to the most northerly point in NZ. The roads were almost desserted the whole way, except for a few cows and sheep! The last 30km was on gravel road which wasn't the most fun in a 1999 toyota with hardly any suspension! It was well worth the effort though as when we got there the clouds seemed to almost disappear so we could get a hint of what the scenery would be like in the sunshine. The lighthouse on the Cape is still in working order and was really picturesque. There were a few...

Aug 17, 2007 - We made it to the top of NZ

NZ is actually quite large. We are staying quite far north near Matauri Bay. From here to the northern tip would look close on a map but it is a bit of a journey. We jumped into the car and started off. The scenery of the North Island is beautiful. It looks like a complete cross between BC and Scotland. Either there are vast rolling grass covered hills or dense temperate rain forest where tress look like they have never been cut down. The towns are few and far between in the North and none really have any size. Our trek took us to the end...

May 18, 2007 - Sand Dune Surfing

A few kilometres south of Cape Reinga on the West coast are gigantic sand dunes. They're absolutely massive, colossal, humungous...get my drift? There's a lady who rocks up in her van, on a daily basis, which is full of body boards and who's making a killing. She hires them to tourists and backpackers to throw themselves down the sand dunes on! It was SOoooo much fun! The hardest and most tiring part being getting to the top of the damn things but once you're there, you literally hurl yourselves down on your belly and you go like the...
