Feb 26, 2009 - Vineyard work

Wow!

Feb 22, 2009 - Week 33 – Week ending 22 February 2009 – South Island, New Zealand

We awoke on Monday morning after a great night’s sleep. We are well and truly back into a good sleep routine and we are waking up much later than usual. After breakfast I gave the van a good clean out and Gary washed and cleaned out the Cruiser. I noticed today for the first time that the leaves on the poplar trees are starting to change colour so summer is coming to an end and autumn will be here soon. We went up to the Post Office and thankfully our part for the van had arrived from Mackay. We grabbed a bit of lunch up town and wandered...

Jan 30, 2009 - South Island

So.... I meant the left side of the road. The right side of the car. I corrected that entry, woops! Anyway, Douce and Genny and I drove from Auckland to Wellington yesterday. That's the whole stretch of the North Island of NZ. It took us 10 hours and 45 min. We got lost at the very beginning adding on some time, then stopped at a gas station, bought a new map, got better directions and were on our way again. I drove the whole stretch. The views were beautiful!! We saw the whole country, and every cow and sheep on the island. Speaking of...

Nov 22, 2008 - The Interislander Ferry to the South Island

November 22, 2008 Before I get into this day’s happenings, we want to thank all those who have e-mailed about enjoying the blog and providing advice for and encouragement in our adventure. It is really good to hear the many voices from home and I’m sorry if we don’t acknowledge each one individually as they are all much appreciated. We were up at 5:30 am in order to catch the 8:25 Interislander Ferry (have to check in an hour before sailing time). Our Apex Car Rental included the vehicle fare and we just had to pay for the passenger tariff....

Nov 16, 2008 - Blenheim (2)

We're in another Top 10 campsite here, but it's pretty good. Lots of room for tents, so you're not crammed in listening to what goes on in the next tent! We're right be a river. It's true we are also directly under South Highway 1 and about 50 meters from the train line – but both are noises we've come to like. We got up late today – deservedly we think. Then we wandered down into town again. We walked in last night too to find something to eat, and weren't very impressed. Not that we went to the 'best spots', we weren't sightseeing, but...

Nov 15, 2008 - Kekerengu - Blenheim

44 miles (10 hours) We had to get up early of course, this morning, so as not to be caught. The Store opened at 07.30, and we were up at 6.00 and packed up by 7.30 on the nose. We thought we'd been scuppered at one point when some dog walkers turned up at 7 or so to walk Bailey, but they just drove off after about 20 minutes. We innocently presented ourselves back at The Store for breakfast at about 7.35, and got to use their facilities again to freshen up before hitting the road just before 9.00. The countryside today was beautiful –...

Nov 1, 2008 - Blenheim, N.Z. - Beginning of South Island Tour

The ferry landed in Picton and we drove straight to Blenheim, the capital of Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand - Marlborough Region. We made a point of visiting a few wineries while here. Montana is the largest. We made a special trip to Cloudy Bay, as it is one of our favourites wines. Interesting area as there are still many sheep farms and cattle farms mixed in with the vineyards. From what we saw only about 50% of the land use is for vineyards. Lots of opportunity for anyone interested in growing their own grapes or getting into the wine...
