Oct 8, 2017 - Nelson to Blenheim

October 8, 2017 Dinner at Stefanos was upstairs above the art cinema complex. Not very big with shared tables and pizzas flying out the door. Was a happening place! We shared 2 medium pizzas with almost a whole one to take home. Nice thin crust. The Hopin Red Ale was terrible. Still raining. Shared a bottle of Fickle Mistress pinot in the TV room watching some rugby and reading. Was warm and out of the rig! Still raining this morning. Made plans for camping in Auckland before returning the rig to Britz next Sunday. Will take the Sky Bus...

Sep 16, 2017 - Blenheim

September 16, 2017 Beautiful sunny morning. Woke to see 6 BIG multi-colored ducks in the garden. Lindsay came out to chat and asked for us to sign the guest book. Such an affable guy. We traded cards and I suspect swe may see Lindsay and Trish in the states. One of their sons, Chris, is a flight engineer for ANZ which provides them with free flights. They have good friends who live in Seattle and they have traveled to San Diego previously. Lindsay suggested we go to Raufo for coffee and breakfast. Beautiful location on the Taylor River...

Sep 15, 2017 - Wellington to Blenheim

September 15, 2017 Up at 6:00 to drive to the ferry. Traffic not as bad as we were told (an hour leaving at 7:00 am). Arrived by 7:15 and did not board until nearly 8:30. Inter-islander ferry is quite comfortable with meal service, movie and coffee. Trip took 3 ½ hours. Did not see too much until we went t through the small islands north of Picton. We were at the head of a row of the ferry. Within 30 minutes we were at the St. Clair winery and restaurant. Josh and Melissa had their favorite chardonnay there, 2014 cell block 11. We were...

Aug 6, 2015 - A Tail-wind home

The Long road home! Well I'm sitting typing this last journal from the comfort of my own home. Wow. It felt amazing to be walking in our door again. I thought someone had renovated our home it looks so flash. Oh that's right. We did. :) It's so huge! Hadn't really thought it was so huge until now. But I am skipping to the end. Like all the book cheats, (sometimes me, but don't tell anyone) that read the last few pages before they begin - just to check that the ending is going to be oK before they bother with those 300 pages...... So, the...

Feb 2, 2015 - Wine and Beer Tasting in Blenheim

No trip to the South Island would be complete without a stop at Marlborough, New Zealand's biggest producer and exporter of wine. Sauvignon Blanc is the most popular grape. Now I have to admit that it is not at all a favorite of mine, nor Fran's, tending to be grassy, minerally, and sharp. But New Zealand has again proved me wrong. The "Sauvie" (as known to the kiwis) here at Yealand's winery won an international gold medal in a competition in France, and sure enough, it's a whole different animal than what we usually get in the States....

Day 7 Distance: 248 Total: 1395 Campground: Kaikoura Top 10 We were awake early this morning to prepare for ferry checkin at 7:45 am. Wellington traffic turned a 20 min drive into an almost hour drive to the ferry terminal. We decided to upgrade to the premium lounge for the crossing – an upgrade that we should have probably not done but it gave us free hot food for breakfast and morning tea; free wifi; and free coffee, beer and wine. The 3 hour crossing went by quickly and what started out as a terrible day weather wise with strong winds,...

Mar 15, 2014 - DAY 20: Hanmer Springs to Blenheim via Kaikoura

Where did all the mountains go? When we arrived yesterday evening we were surrounded by beautiful hills and mountains - when we awoke this morning they had all disappeared...replaced by low cloud, mist and drizzle. We therefore quickly decided that our intended walk up 'Conical Hill' was a non-starter, so we headed off east to Kaikoura. As we weren't in any great hurry we decided to take the back-country Route 70 from Waiau instead of cutting across to SH1. What a choice! The scenery was amazing and incredibly varied - well worth the rather...

Jan 20, 2014 - South Island

We set our alarm for 6 as we had an early ferry to catch. The drive around the bay was glorious in the morning sunshine. We got to the terminal in good time to,discover they had moved the departure time out by 35 minutes - oh bother! Crossing time was a little over 3 hours but the loading and unloading took for ever; the kiwis are a very friendly bunch but sooooo relaxed. It wasn't at all like the cross channel ferries. The voyage took us out of Wellington harbour, across the Cook Strait where we met the ocean swell and several pods of...

off we go!

Jun 26, 2012 - Blenheim

We started early today – having to get up at 5.30, to check out, get the mystery-van loaded and get onto the inter-islander ferry by 7 o’clock. On arriving in the foyer of our Wellington apartment, we suddenly realized how lucky we had been to have a fine day yesterday. Today was windy (gusts up to 120km/hr), wet, wild and freezing. I was quite nervous about going on the ferry to the south island in such ridiculous weather. It didn’t help that while we boarded the ferry, there was news reports asking everyone to stay indoors today and...

Mar 21, 2012 - Wine touring

IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE!!! well, today was our wine tasting day in Blenheim!  We started out in the rig around 10:30 am going from winery to winery!  So fun! Each one was so different- They usually allow u to sample 3-5 different types with Sav Blanc being what they are famous for in this region. It's amazing how much we learned from this experience. Everything makes a difference in wine making!  The harvest is a week or two behind schedule due to the cool weather they have had. The vines are FULL of ripening grapes. Everyone was really...

Mar 20, 2012 - Blenheim

We were awake a lot during the night with gale force winds rocking our camper- felt like we were in a boat!! No way there would be any boat tours today. Mark studied our indoor options up the road. We headed out for Blenheim Via Picton. He is a wonderful tour guide & an amazing rig driver too!  It was quite challenging in these high winds to keep the rig on the road!  I call this our white knuckle trip! Whew! It was beautiful & scenic with LOTS of curvy roads with u-turns & very flimsy wooden guardrails that looked like toothpicks! In...
