Apr 27, 2017 - Car sale and more soccer

First, the car story: Many of folks from the S'toon soccer teams are staying on a small cruise ship on the Auckland harbour. There is a small crew on the boat which switches out every 4 days. Last night/ this morning the ship's captain announced that this crew switch was sad because one of the female crew members was quitting the crew to travel around NZ. He presented her with a going away package and then said that all she was missing was a good car and that she needed to buy one today! Our friends on the boat immediately sent us a message...

Apr 25, 2017 - ANZAC day in NZ, Sky tower visits

ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corps) day is like Remembrance Day in Canada. honours those who fought in WWI at Gallipoli. I attended the ceremony held at the Masters Games site. Our Games Reg pkg includes transportation in Auckland as well as passes to several attractions. This morning, we went up the sky tower and this evening I went up again to see the city lights. I also took a long bus ride out to the tennis venue and visited with John Stewart whose wife was competing in tennis doubles. (John was my boss at Soil Science many years...

Apr 24, 2017 - April 24, 2017 – Auckland, New Zealand to Dallas, Texas

April 24, 2017 – Auckland, New Zealand to Dallas, Texas After Patsy left this morning, I repacked a few things, dropped my luggage off at the desk and headed out to catch the bus. There were a couple of stops which the bus didn’t make yesterday because of the Masters Games. Today, we did those stops, one of which had a great view across the harbor. I hadn’t had any breakfast so I had lunch at the Auckland Military Museum. From there I got on the bus again and got off at Mt. Eden. Auckland is built on 4 volcano craters, and the one at Mt....

Apr 23, 2017 - April 23, 2017 – Auckland, New Zealand

April 23, 2017 – Auckland, New Zealand We had breakfast this morning in the Terrace. We had to be out of our rooms by 8 a.m. so that they could clean and prep them for new passengers who would be boarding starting at noon. We were the last off the ship because we were staying in Auckland tonight so it was about 9 when we left the ship. Everyone who had airplane connections were off the ship first. As we were standing in line to get on the bus to the hotel, Olga and Tatiana, 2 of our favorite waitresses, came and gave us big hugs as they...

Apr 22, 2017 - Our events begin

This morning, I ran/walked the half marathon. The weather was great, the course flat and scenic(along the waterfront) and everything was very well organized.I found out that it is quite challenging to complete that distance without proper training! Brian played his first soccer game this morning and has a game every second day for the next few days. We also watched the women's soccer team from S'toon play this afternoon.

Apr 21, 2017 - Opening Ceremonies at World Masters Games

We spent the morning trying to get a dent out of the car in preparation for selling it on Sunday. It looks a bit better so hopefully was worth the time we spent. A large number of soccer players from S'toon are staying on a cruise ship in the harbour and we joined them for a dinner on the ship before going to the opening ceremonies. The entertainment portion of the ceremony was awesome. I was not able to take any good pictures, but found a few nice Youtube videos and would like them to place a link to them here if I knew how!! So I will...

Apr 11, 2017 - Coming Home

Tuesday, April 11, 2017 Heading Home TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” - Robert Louis Stevenson Generally speaking, I prefer the “moving” to be onto a vacation parade; not such a big fan of the ”moving” along on home part of it…..LOL. But today is the day to take it on homeward…. Woke up at 7:15, well ahead of the alarm at 8. Not excited about the flying home but I do get anxious about missing a flight and so I always seem to wake up early...

Monday, April 10, 2017 Auckland, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “It is not down in any map; true places never are.” - Hermen Melville Okay, okay, I know New Zealand is on a map; but the feeling this quote gives me is more about how some truly wonderous places, miraculous places that touch your soul, aren’t indicated that way on a map. You simply find them and feel it. That is how I feel about New Zealand - it touches a chord in my heart I never knew was there... Woke up a little before 7 to some sunshine and a few clouds; most of our...

Mar 31, 2017 - Auckland

Our jet lag woke us up early so we decided to get up and walk into sky city, where we headed up the sky tower. Then spent the rest of the day in Albert park burning our faces. The following day we decided to get the ferry to Waheike Island. To save as much money as possible we hitch hiked everywhere and spent the afternoon on palm beach.

Monday, March 27, 2017 Auckland, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” - Mary Anne Radmacher I hate to be packing up; means the end of our time on the South Island is nigh. I’m like a kid who’s on summer break; I refuse to acknowledge the approaching day to return to school and just pretend it’ll stay summer forever! LOL. Don’t want to get school supplies, don’t want new outfit or shoes. Want to stay up late, sleep in, ride my bike, watch TV and enjoy the good...

Mar 19, 2017 - Quiet day in Auckland

We started the day with a walk up Mount Eden for some beautiful 360* views of Auckland and surrounding area. Then several trips to the banks to get enough cash together to pay for our car. Cycled to the Arts Centre to enjoy some Free stage music. We were not too bothered about getting a lot of activities squeezed into these few days since we will be back in Auckland for about 10 days at the end of April.r

Mar 18, 2017 - Car shopping and cycling

In spite of the travel and time change, we seemed to have a lot of energy today. We spent several hours at the Auckland City Car Fair and made a deal on a 1998 Toyota Station wagon with some included camping gear. We will take possession of this vehicle and hit the road on Monday morning. We spent most of the remainder of the day cycling about 25 km along the waterfront and back to the hostel.
