Apr 11, 2017 - Coming Home

Tuesday, April 11, 2017 Heading Home TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.” - Robert Louis Stevenson Generally speaking, I prefer the “moving” to be onto a vacation parade; not such a big fan of the ”moving” along on home part of it…..LOL. But today is the day to take it on homeward…. Woke up at 7:15, well ahead of the alarm at 8. Not excited about the flying home but I do get anxious about missing a flight and so I always seem to wake up early...

Apr 10, 2017 - Auckland, New Zealand

Monday, April 10, 2017 Auckland, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “It is not down in any map; true places never are.” - Hermen Melville Okay, okay, I know New Zealand is on a map; but the feeling this quote gives me is more about how some truly wonderous places, miraculous places that touch your soul, aren’t indicated that way on a map. You simply find them and feel it. That is how I feel about New Zealand - it touches a chord in my heart I never knew was there... Woke up a little before 7 to some sunshine and a few clouds; most of our...

Mar 31, 2017 - Auckland

Our jet lag woke us up early so we decided to get up and walk into sky city, where we headed up the sky tower. Then spent the rest of the day in Albert park burning our faces. The following day we decided to get the ferry to Waheike Island. To save as much money as possible we hitch hiked everywhere and spent the afternoon on palm beach.

Monday, March 27, 2017 Auckland, New Zealand TRAVEL QUOTE OF THE DAY: “I am not the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world.” - Mary Anne Radmacher I hate to be packing up; means the end of our time on the South Island is nigh. I’m like a kid who’s on summer break; I refuse to acknowledge the approaching day to return to school and just pretend it’ll stay summer forever! LOL. Don’t want to get school supplies, don’t want new outfit or shoes. Want to stay up late, sleep in, ride my bike, watch TV and enjoy the good...

Mar 19, 2017 - Quiet day in Auckland

We started the day with a walk up Mount Eden for some beautiful 360* views of Auckland and surrounding area. Then several trips to the banks to get enough cash together to pay for our car. Cycled to the Arts Centre to enjoy some Free stage music. We were not too bothered about getting a lot of activities squeezed into these few days since we will be back in Auckland for about 10 days at the end of April.r

Mar 18, 2017 - Car shopping and cycling

In spite of the travel and time change, we seemed to have a lot of energy today. We spent several hours at the Auckland City Car Fair and made a deal on a 1998 Toyota Station wagon with some included camping gear. We will take possession of this vehicle and hit the road on Monday morning. We spent most of the remainder of the day cycling about 25 km along the waterfront and back to the hostel.

Mar 17, 2017 - Arrival in Auckland

After several long flights, Vancouver to Hong Kong, followed by Hong Kong to Auckland, we arrived in New Zealand, with no idea of what time or even what day it was! But we soon discovered that it was St Patrick's day! After checking in to our room at Oaklands Lodge, we cycled downtown to meet Herb and Deb at the Hilton. It was quite a coincidence that they are here on Herb's business conference trip at the same time we are! We had our first New Zealand meal and discovered that restaurant meals here are more costly than at home.

Mar 5, 2017 - City of Sails

Next stop Auckland New Zealand. We have two days at sea before we reach the land of Kiwis. The first day is grey and drizzly and is going to stay like that for most of the day. I decide to have a facial and relax in the spa. Lots of decisions to make, do I use one of the steam room first, the hydro pool or just relax on the heated ceramic beds! Exhausting! Ian plays chess, goes to lectures and the gym amongst other things. Since leaving Southampton we have travelled 20395 nautical miles. When we reach Auckland we will be half way through...

Feb 16, 2017 - Piha & Waitakere

Bucketing! We got picked up at 8.30 for our trip to the rainforest and beach. We drove to the Arataki visitor centre, which was guarded by a huge totem pole made from the Kauri tree. The Kauri is an endangered species as it is infected by bacteria transported in the soil. The totem is called the high pou (post) and is carved with whakairo and there are more of these carvings inside the centre. We stopped at Kitekite falls for a photo, and also saw the Nihotupu reservoir. We stopped at Piha for lunch. We supposed to have an opportunity to...

Started with breakfast at Danny's. Then it was time for the city tour. We picked up the bus at the bus station next to the Sky Tower. This is on Hobson St which is named after the governor of New Zealand William Hobson who negotiated a treaty with the maori in 1800s. We then went to the Aotea Square, which a large maori entrance gate. The town hall was also in this square. We then went to Karangahape Road which has an interesting story about a tribe leaving their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki to settle in the new Land in 1350ad. We then...
