Sep 29, 2019 - Nijmegen, Netherlands

Nijmegen is pronounced just like it is spelled if there was no'j'. It is the oldest city in the Netherlands, over 2000 years in existence. In 1940, the Netherlands was invaded by Germany with Nijmegen being the first Dutch city to fall into German hands. On 22 Feb 1944, it was heavily bombed by American planes, causing great damage to the city center. It was ruled an accidental bombing caused by poor communications and chaos in the airspace. The Germans tried to use the accident to turn the Dutch people against the Allies but it didn't...

May 25, 2019 - Day 3 = Nijmegan walking tour

After a leisurely breakfast, we were taken on a walking tour in the oldest city in the Netherlands. We are cruising on the Rhine but the city is nearby on the Waal River. We went up a hill to the Valkhof spook house, chapel, and remnants of the Imperial castle. The spook house is really a museum and temporary home of artists who claim the house is haunted. On up we went to the town center to see the great St. Stephen's Church and then to the main shopping district where an outdoor market was set up for the day. I wandered off and found the...

Dec 25, 2018 - Christmas Day

Tuesday 25th: Christmas Day!! Nijmegan is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands. Our guide was a lovely lady call Marinka who gave up her Christmas morning to show us the town. Some of the oldest parts were Roman ruins which were used in ancient times as heating mechanisms. The Besiendershuys is a medieval house which used to be a toll house and Blauwe Steen a market place with weigh house. There was a mass in progress in the large old church and we took in some of the music for a short while. It was a cold morning but very quiet...

Jul 2, 2014 - De Pannenkoekenboot

Last night we purchased tickets to take a river cruise on the Waal River from Nijmegen on the famed Pannenkockenboot. It is a 2 ½ hour sightseeing cruise with all-you-can eat pannenkoeken. The drive to Nijmegen was a little of a half an hour and we managed to find parking along the riverbank close to the boat. We purposely arrived a couple of hours before our 1:15 pm boarding time so we would have time to explore the town Nijmegen prior. We had some trouble, however, paying for parking since the machine did not accept our credit card and...

May 30, 2013 - Mountain Biking in the Netherlands

When we arrived in Amsterdam we purchased some mountain bikes but as of yet they had not seen any dirt, just paved bike paths. We found some muddy mountain bike trails which made Richard very happy as he is having withdrawal from not being able to ride the trails. Even though everyone rides bicycles in the Netherlands, mountain biking does not seem to be very popular, probably because of the flat terrain and wet weather. Trails were not very technical like we have in the southwest desert but still fun. Our mountain bikes are Giant front...

May 26, 2010 - Nijmegen,The Netherlands

Wednesday May 26, 2010 at 0830 we officially arrived in the Netherlands at the city of Nijmegen (say it like it is spelled), we are in Dutch Country. Not much to write about Bonn, Germany as you saw in the previous day's blog - it was a typical large city. Only difference was the open air fruit, vegatable, meat, cheese and flower markets in the center city. All of the "great shopping" did not materialize for the ladies. We had the typical 3 meals on board the ship and a fun night in the lounge watching a magican performing his humor and...
