Oct 4, 2017 - Resistance

Haarlem - The news came this morning about the slaughter in Las Vegas. "This is the price of freedom." Bill O'Reilly. Really? I'm twenty times less likely to be killed by firearms here in Europe. And I don't feel a bit constrained. Wasn't it even a rule in the old Wild West that you checked your guns at the town limits? My most memorable experience in Haarlem was visiting the Corrie Ten Boom house. She and her family hid Jews as members of the Resistance. Corrie survived her incarceration in a concentration camp due only to a clerical...

Sep 19, 2017 - Arrival in Haarlem

September 18 Haarlem Arrived in Haarlem about 3:00 pm after a good flight into Amsterdam, and a bus ride to Haarlem. Along the way I observed bike parking lots, lace curtains in the windows, and the occasional canal, so I know I’m in the Netherlands! Haarlem is a lovely small city and makes for a nice relaxed start to the trip. I was reminded very soon to watch for bicycles as much or more than cars! My hotel is right on the Grote Markt, the old market square in the center of town. My hotel overlooks the square which makes for a lovely...

Jan 3, 2017 - Last day

I've had so much fun and now it's my last day in Dubai. We went to Miracle Garden today. An incredible place. It has been open since Valentine's Day 2013 and of course, it's the largest natural flower garden in the world with 100 million flowers covering 7200 sq meters. It cost 11 million dollars to build. I hope you get a sense of the splender of the place from the photos. Must tell about getting to the garden. Took a wrong exit and Penny saw where we should be. She left the pavement driving onto the sand, over a sand bank to get to the...

Dec 31, 2016 - Over the top

The fun continues and the days fly by. The day before New Years we did a sunrise picnic on the beach, Jumeirah beach. It was so fun to paddle around in the warm, salty water and to collect shells. It has been very foogy in the mornings with the dew so heavy, anything outside is wet. It also makes for a chilly morning. We were fortunate during our beach morning as it was not foggy. We left the beach before it got too hot. Perfectly fun. I noticed that there is a nice bike path along the beach. New Year's Eve was unbelievable, incredible and...

Dec 29, 2016 - Wow Factor

As only Dubai can do, I've seen some WOW these past 2 days. Last night we had dinner at Royal Mirage Hotel. What a spectacular place located on the water. I hope the photos give you some idea of the splendid. I don't know how many restaurants there are in the hotel;we went to a Moroccan one. Penny ordered a set menu which meant we tried over 20 dishes including an appetizer made with pigeon in a pastry topped with icing sugar. Remarkably good. A to die for dessert was a filo dish with a custard. Today we went to an outlet mall of designer...

Dec 27, 2016 - Penny's garden

Spent yesterday poolside (got slightly pink from my sun bathing) and hanging around the villa. I took the opportunity to take photos of Penny's garden. So different from the holly, pine and cedar of home. And to harvest fruits in the winter, what a concept. Seeing some colourful birds too. Must mention I often hear the soft sound of prayer coming from the Mosque not far from Penny's villa.

Dec 26, 2016 - Un Boxing Day

This boxing dat was a pampering experience. Over an hour spent with one woman giving me a manicure and another woman giving me a pedicure, at the same time. Way fun. The spa was in IBN BattutaMall, where we had our feast the other night. Interesting that although it was Boxing Day, there were no major sales going on. Christmas merchandise was apparent but no sales on the merchandise nor was the mall particularly crowded. Penny says they just don't do those sales here. Get this, the mall offers valet parking so no stress of looking for a...

Dec 25, 2016 - A Most Unique Christmas

What a unique and memorable Christmas it has been. We started our day by attending Christmas Day service at a church not far from Penny's home. My first impression was what a cultural, racial mix the congregation was. It was also a very different atmosphere from the church I attended as a child as it was not nearly as quiet or solemn an atmosphere; people talked during the service, there was laughter and clapping. Since the turkey was done, we ate earlier than planned and what a scrumptious meal we consumed. Nona made the most delicious...

Dec 23, 2016 - Ho!Ho!Ho!

It is Christmas Eve day and I'm feeling most Merry. Hope you all are too! It was a long haul getting here in crowded airports and delayed flights. Penny in her usual, thoughtfulness has been planning and doing. Upon arriving in Dubai airport, Penny arranged to have this woman who greeted and escorted me making sure I was using the right exits. She took me thru an expedited line for customs. I was through in no time. Waiting for my bag took longer. Then Connie and Penny were there to greet me with open arms! What a welcome! In my ensuite were...

Dec 20, 2016 - One more sleep

Tomorrow is an exciting day as I head off for Dubai. That's right, I'm seeing Dubai again but this time it is to spend Christmas with family. I will join my sister and neice who have travelled from Alberta to be with Penny, my neice who lives in Dubai. I have lovely visions of palm trees and white sand, my kind of White Christmas. My bags are packed and I'm ready to go. All that's left is to get a good nights sleep; not an easy task given my excit excitement.

Jun 7, 2016 - A wonderful end to a wonderful holiday

June 6 is a crazy travel day. We are taking 3 trains to get to Haarlem, just outside Amsterdam which is our home for the last 2 nights. We get to the train station and learn how to decipher where our car will be located in the train and what letter on the boarding platform we should stand by to be close. Then an announcement, they have changed the sequencing of the train cars. It is a free for all and everyone has suitcases. Thank goodness we got seats reserved. We get on the right car and the train leaves on time, with the aisle full of...

May 25, 2015 - Granda to Malaga to Torremolinos

Today was a travel day beginning with a taxi ride to the bus station. For 6 E we were driven to the bus rather than having to find our own way there. Got on the bus to Malaga no problem. It was a quiet ride, first time I've seen Spanish people quiet. It got more mountainous as we traveled, seemed like snow tunnels to me. Arrived in Malaga to see more Jacarunda trees. Malaga impresses as a modern city, not the charm of Granada and Seville. Instead of finding our own way to the hotel from the bus depot, we again took a cab and checked in just...
