Apr 19, 2015 - Den Helder

Sunday 19th. I must have been sleeping during Geography class those many yrs. ago but nowhere in my memory (I know that doesn’t say much) do I remember Amsterdam being on a bay not the ocean. Check it out. A cannel was built across the land from Amsterdam to the ocean which apparently saved days for ships trying to fight the currents to get out of the Markermeer. Who knew!! We broke camp and headed back to the bike stores only to find them closed. Umff. (we were told they would be open) We headed north to walk the dikes, stopping in the...

Apr 19, 2013 - Keukenhof Flower Festival

This morning we hopped on Doris again & rode the four miles down to the Keukenhof gardens. A rather large area of gardens and display buildings. The weather is still cold and windy so not as pleasant as it might have been, plus all the flowers are about three weeks behind in their flowering due to the cold. Anyway Viv enjoyed it and there were some spectacular displays especially in the orchid house. We had a picnic lunch in the gardens before a series of rain showers put a dampener on things and we decided to call it a day. We managed to...

TRAVELS WITH ELSIE

Jun 29, 2012 - De Familie Baan

So we are now with the Familie Baan: Oom Wim, Tante Rian, Peter, Nienke, and Johanneke. The last time that I saw them was eight years ago when Peter was 13, Nienke was 11, and Johanneke only 7. Though we saw Nienke recently and Peter at our wedding, the others Daniel last saw too long ago. This was also our first time in their new house in Den Helder as they previously stayed in Anna Paulowna. Oom Wim's multimedia system at home is something to behold whereby literally every computer speaks to every other electronic application inside his...

Feb 11, 2006 - Flight Back Home

I had my suspicions and they came true, returning the car at Santiago airport the guy pointed out two "picures" on the front fender, just left and right of the number plate. I knew they were there; I had noted them after I had the car washed a few days earlier. I came across them checking to see if the job was done well. "Some body must have backed up against my car trying to get out of a parking position", was my defence. Actually that could be true, but equally it could have been me that had done it at some point, I have lived in Paris...

Jacki's Journey

Aug 21, 2004 - Amsterdam, the Netherlands

Written by Karen: We flew from D.C. to Cape Town, South Africa, but had a one week stopover in London on the way. We used that time to visit my friends in London and Amsterdam. First stop was Amsterdam, where we visited my childhood friend Bonnie. Bonnie is working as a nanny for an American woman named Pam who is in Amsterdam on a temporary work contract for a baby food company. Bonnie takes care of her two daughters, ages 6 and 11. Pam generously allowed us to stay in their guest room, which was great because accommodation prices in...
